1974 Ford N70.. need help

Hey everyone, I posted a couple of days ago but got no response... I recently got a 1974 Ford N70 dump truck and have no clue about this truck. This is my first BIG truck, I am definitely a Ford man as I currently have a 2006 F350 SD 6.0 diesel, 1985 F250 351W 4bbl holley, 1974 N70(?) dump truck, early model Ford 961 tractor with front end loader, 90's 1720 4x4 diesel with loader and backhoe and a Shibaura(ford produced for Japanese farmers) 1840 4x4.

Anyway, any help in ID'ing this vehicle would be appreciated ALSO it needs parts, windshield wiper switch/motor, headlights, rear brake parts, etc.. if anyone has info where I can purchase parts that would be GREAT!

A service manual would be good too!

The VIN is: N70EVU11473
I am getting tags tomorrow, can take a picture of the vehicle plate(on the door) for more info then.. I left a message for NumberDummy but like I said, no response as of yet.. hope they/he/she are still active on the forum

Thanks,
FordMan1965

Thanks,

You have a 74 LN 700 The L is known as Louisville truck thus the L. The N is for the short hood or cab forward if you will. If the truck was a tandem it would be an LNT model. I don't think they make a tandem on the 700 series.

I left a message for NumberDummy, but I typed it in the "If you need any info" thread. So many people type in this thread, some are overlooked.

Anyway, any help in ID'ing this vehicle would be appreciated. ALSO it needs parts, windshield wiper switch/motor, headlights, rear brake parts, etc.

VIN: N70EVU11473
N70 = LN700 (gas).

E = 361 2V or 4V FT engine.

V = Kentucky Truck Assembly Plant.

U11473 = 1974.

As you can see, the decoded VIN doesn't give much info. Decoding the Warranty Plate codes gives much more.

Warranty Plate riveted to the left door face below the latch. Post a pic of it or list all the codes stamped on it.

Most of the parts are obsolete, some are available NOS (New Old Stock) from Ford dealers and obsolete parts vendors.

For example: DOHZ-17A553-A .. Wiper Switch (Motorcraft SW-915) / Obsolete ~ Applications: All 1970/89 L (Louisville) Series Trucks.

DOWNS FORD in Tom's River NJ has 1 = 732-329-2240.

NOS PARTS LTD in Waxahachie TX has 1 = 972-937-2201.

MEADOWLAND FORD TRUCKS in Secaucus NJ has 2 = 201-617-0700.

No other Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.

While Green Sales Co. in Cincinnati OH (513-731-3304/800-543-4959) doesn't have any, they have the largest stock of Ford obsolete parts on the planet.

Mechanical (engine/trans/rear axle/steering/suspension/brake and etc) parts can usually be purchased from NAPA and indie auto parts stores.

The 1973/79 Ford Heavy Truck Parts Catalog is available on a C/D from hipoparts.com

faxonautolit.com (store located in Riverside CA) may have the shop manual. L series intro'd in 1970, as was the full shop manual, then supplements were added for following years.

So, you will need the 1970 shop manual and 1971 thru 1974 supplements.

Thank you, both of you. I had a rough day today and will get the info tomorrow. I appreciate all the information so far. It will be invaluable and I hope to fix the brakes first thing. That thing is very expensive to register, even as a "farm" vehicle. I would have never thought it would cost so much for an old truck like that... Again, thanks.

Like I said, I got pics of the warranty plate. Can you please tell me more about this truck? Thanks. Well, I don't see an upload icon to paste my pic. I will have to read some of the posts to figure out how to upload pics... sorry.

1974 Warranty Plate

Hello everyone, thanks for the prior replies. I have gotten the Warranty plate info and a picture of the truck in my album. Here is the link for the plate..

Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums - FordMan1965's Album: 1974 N70 - Picture

Any information about this truck would be much appreciated. I have ordered a service manual but I am not sure it is what I needed. I downloaded a PDF and not to sure if this is going to be what I need.

The current problems with this truck are the brakes(btw, this is all new to me. I had no idea you had to remove the axle, bearings etc to access the drums.. wow), windshield wiper motor(missing), split diff not working and some other little things...

Thanks again to everyone who posted on my other comments..

WOW, this gives me goose bumps.. special ordered. Does anyone know what the "Domestic Special Order front axle" means?

The truck is in really good condition, however it does need some work. Is there possibly a link on the forum that discusses the 2 speed rear-end and how the shifter works? I have looked but there are a million posts here..

GREAT info, another funny thing is I am in S. Ohio and this truck appears to be from MO. makes you wonder how that worked out.. huh.

Thanks again...

It was an axle that was not listed for an LN600/750, but may have been listed for a LN800/900.

The largest weight capacity optional front axle for LN600/750's was rated at 9,000 lbs. The standard equipment front axle (1974/79) was rated at 5,500 lbs.

Whoever ordered the truck wanted a heavier duty axle. LN800/900's offered axles of 9,000, 12,000, 18,000 & 20,000 lbs.

Is it one of these, or something else? You'll have to order a copy of the trucks original build sheet from martiauto.com to find out, or...

You can look on the axle for a stamped ID number and post what it is.

ID number will be composed of a 4 digit prefix followed by 3002 or 3010 followed by a 1 or 2 digit suffix. Example: D0HA-3010-G

Thanks NumberDummy, the door plate shows FR axle 9,000 so that must have been the SPO.

You seem to have all the answers.. lol. I was wondering if you have a part number for the WIPER MOTOR and who might have one. I called one of the numbers that you listed and they gave me this part number "f2hz17508a" but I can't seem to find any anywhere. They do have it NEW but want 350+... just a bit steep for me.

Thanks again, this forum has tons of info and I will continue to be on here as much as possible.
