I have two 8ft beds that have two different sizes of inner bedside wheel well openings. From the outside everything matches. But inside, the wheel well tub is 10 inches closer to the tailgate. Why did they make these with different openings. Hope I explained it right. The top photo shows bed with around 22-23 inches from back of bed to well opening. Second photo shows about 12-14 inches from back of bed to well opening. I'm curious to why the differences. I thought they were same 73-79.
The one with the opening closer to the rear is from a camper special (I think). It had the axle set back for towing. I'm not sure but I don't think there are many of those left around, might be worth something.
Some one smarter will respond and correct me if I'm wrong.
The regular long bed (8' bed) had a 133" wheel base. The Super Camper Special had an 8 foot bed also but it had a 140" wheel base.
The SCS also had the spare tire mounted in a special bedside compartment ahead of the right side rear wheel.

He isn't comparing a SCS and a normal bed. He is comparing a 1973 bed to a 1974+ bed.
The inner wheel well is different on the 1973 versus 74+
