okay guys i got a new one, first off with out the truck being on or even having a key in it my truck is trying to turn itself over, the only way i got it to stop was disconnect the battery. any ideas on what could be causing this? my dad who has had handfuls of of 73-79 fords and this is the first time he's ever seen anything like this.
When you go to check it again, if it does the same thing, try pulling the 'S' wire off the solenoid while she's trying to turn over. If it stops, the problem would be in the wiring from the switch to the solenoid - a shorted/fused always on type deal. Or, the ignition switch itself. Or the neutral/clutch safety switch.
If it still does it with the S wire disconnected, it's what Jim said - a shorted out solenoid. Try smacking it (the solenoid) with a small beater - maybe it'll loosen up the shorted contacts.
Sounds like the original owner is back from the grave trying to repo his ride! Lol. I had a solenoid that stuck on my old 4x4 and it would continuously crank until the battery died even with the key off. I replaced it and never had the issue again.
Mine did that, then I changed both the Ign. switch and solenoid. It fixed the prob, but then smoke started willowing out from the steering column and the truck died and will only turn over now.
Just because the ignition switch is new doesn't mean it's not the problem. We're are not telling you to replace your solenoid (yet). We're explaining a simple test to perform next time the problem occurs to isolate the issue. If it happens to be the solenoid, then great, but hold on to your $25 for now until you have more information.

It's probably the solenoid. My truck did that this morning after I kept trying to start it on a dead battery. The battery had just enough juice to make the solenoid move and close the circuit and get stuck. I walked over the the solenoid and tapped the top of it with a hammer. Then the truck acted as normal
