Looking at getting new shocks and was wondering if the Bilstein Shocks are really that much better than ones like Rough Country or Skyjacker that are half the cost. Thanks
I can't give you a comparison but I tow a 31' 5er through the eastern sierras and am totally happy with the bilsteins. You can save a few bucks but if your not happy then you spend the extra money in the long run. Your decision.
Great pricing, free shipping (when I bought mine) and they shipped the next day.
Since Bilstein Company has a lifetime warranty, after 100,000 miles I sent them back due to "getting soft" and Bilstein sent me 4 new shocks at no charge!!!!
I also have a Bilstein steering stabilizer shock which is 100% better than the Rancho brand I had before it... and their warranty at Rancho was worthless... so I went with Bilstein (they did not have a steering shock when I first swapped out the OEM one... but now they do!!!!
Great customer service and solid dependable shock construction and service.
They may not have the "dazzle" as some other brands in the 4X4 world... but I would put them up against anything else... long term that is.
Thanks guys, thats what I figured. How long have yall had them on, how long are guys seeing them last?
Since my Excursion is diesel and 4X4, it has a gross weight of 8,000lbs... so very heavy before any luggage, kids, dogs and/or towing.
My point is... one heavy truck for the shocks to smooth out the ride on.
My OEM shocks went 50,000 miles or so
1st set of Bilstein shocks - 50,000 - 150,000 miles
2nd set of Bilsteins shocks - 150,000 - 228,000 (still on truck)
Shocks wear out and with their lifetime warranty... you just call them up, send them back (your expense) and they will test them and will advise. What they do is sell you replacement shocks at a set price and then refund your money if the one's you sent back are defective.
Great customer service and your dealing with Bilstein directly and not through a dealer/retailer.
I'm a huge Bilstein fan. BUT... I went with Rancho RS9000s this time because I can adjust the dampening based on our load, and it really works. It also works if you decide you want bigger tires and need to control that jounce you end up getting.
We go from a pretty packed heavy package with the camper on and trailer in back and I turn the dampening to the max. Empty it's 3-4 clicks (out of 9), and that works towing the dump trailer too -- I think it's the camper's weight we really need them for. So it depends on your situation. I can't comment on how long they last or warranty as we don't put a lot of miles on the truck, but it does see some pretty abusive off road with the camper on, and for 18000 miles they've been great.
I'd replace them in a heartbeat if Bilstein made an externally adjustable shock (heck maybe they do by now!)...
