Tranny plug

I have a 3 sp manual tranny, from a 59 F100 with a 272. On the top of the tranny is an open hole about 1/4-3/8" round. It is not threaded. Is there supposed to be a pressure release plug in it. I tried to post a picture but was unsuccessful in loading it

Sounds like you are talking about the vent.
