Ranger Diff. Tech Q's

OK, looking to convert a 3.73 rear end to a 4.10 LS rear end on a 2000 ranger... The rear end, as I understand it, is a 8.8 inch. I was looking through a parts catalog, and I found some LS conversions listed for "all Ford 8.8 rear ends"... This raises some questions...

1. Would a LS package change the gearing of the rear end? Or is that separate?

2. How is this going to effect my speedo/RABS sensor on the rear axle? What exactly does this take a reading off of? I couldn't see much through the little hole when I had to change it. And yes, my speedo comes off the rear end sensor. I know some others do not.

I don't have an awful lot of experience with working with rear ends, only changing complete rear axles.... I do know how a regular open diff works, but LS packages are a bit of a mystery to me. Anybody have a clue?

1. Gears and L/S are seperate issues. One does not affect the other.

2. If it is the same setup as on the F150's, different gears don't affect the speedometer because the sensor is located after the gears and just reads the axle speed. Tire height is what affects the speedo's.

OK, so I need a different gear set AND a LS pack... simple enough...

Upon reading my Haynes, I now know that the speedo/RABS sensor comesoff it's own, seperate cmponent in the rear end... Looks like a disc with tabs cut into the outside to trigger the sensor... Hope that piece carries over to the new gear set. Boy, wouldn't it suck to lose the speedo!!!

Limited slip units actually replace the ring gear carrier and spider gears of an "open" differential. You need to replace the gear sets. Not exactly a DIY project for the first time around.

There will be some adjustment(s) that need to be made. I haven't done a Ford rear end myself, but backlash and pinion position come to mind. Backlash adjustment will possibly require the use of a dial indicator. If you have excessive backlash in there, the unit will tend to whine when driving.

A gear change will affect the speedometer, see the Ford procedure for reprograming the PCM for this change in the technical information post at the top of the board.
