78 f100 dipstick lenth

The oil dipstick in my 1978 truck with the 300 inline 6 engine is 18" long. It bottoms out in the pan and actually has a slight bend caused by it hitting the bottom. As a result, I get very high oil level readings WAY past the full mark even though I just changed the oil and I know that there is only 6 quarts. Obviously either it's the wrong dipstick or the tube has been replaced with one that is shorter than the original. Should I just mark the stick at the full mark where it shows now that I just changed oil with 6 quarts and just not worry about it? If so, where should I make the low level mark?

If you want to put a full and low mark on the current stick, then put 5 quarts and mark that as the low level. Then add the 6th quart and mark that as the full level.

EDIT: I found that depending on how the dipstick tube is mounted determines the length of the dipstick. This mounting was changed depending on what vehicle it was intended for.
I can measure my current stick of you would like, but the length may vary depending on how yours is mounted.

I got a question.
How many qts of oil should the 300 take if changing the oil & filter?

If I follow what you posted above with a new filter, 5qts mark low, 6qts mark high, I now start and run the motor and fill the filter with a qt of oil I would now be at the low mark no??

It takes 6 quarts total with the filter change.

Thanks I will have to remember that when I go and start mine as I can't remember how much I put in but should be safe for a startup as I think it was only 5.

So being it takes 6 qts what I said above holds true.
