first start after oil change
I know I have seen this discussed before but search was negative. Just curious if anyone knows how long the engine will run off of a full HPOP reservoir if the oil filter is not filled during an oil change, and what if any real damage will be done since all of the bearing journals will still have an oil film on them. Assuming that the change is done "hot" and not a stone cold engine.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I have my changes done by a local company. I don't have a way to collect & dispose of four gallons of oil without a hassle. These folks are a husband and wife team and have been in business for several years not just some kids but I feel awkward asking if they fill the filter first. Most likely they do but I don't want to insult with dumb questions.

I have done it both ways. I usually fill the filter, but I forgot once. No issue at all. The truck never missed a beat.
As far as asking questions, I wouldn't feel funny about it. You are paying them for a service and if you want clarification of what they are doing, they should be very willing to give you an answer. In fact, most people like talking about their work if they feel like they do a good job. They want you to know what they are doing. I am always suspicious of people who don't want you to know what they are doing when performing a service. Just my $.02.

If the HPOP runs out of oil, the engine will stop before damage occurs. The injectors are run by oil, after all.
The truth is that the low pressure oil pump pumps more oil than the HPOP can use. The HPOP reservoir has a gravity overflow back to the oil pan. This makes it unlikely that the HPOP will ever run out, even with a dry filter.

Caterpillar had a bulletin out a few years ago about this and said to never pre fill any filter oil or fuel! their reasoning was that you have just introduced un filtered oil in the lubrication system. there is enough oil in the bearings to lubricate them for the 5 to 10 seconds it takes to fill the filter and pressurize the system.
also the hpop has enough oil to keep the engine going untill the lpop starts to replenish it.

the ford 300 is mounted totaly horizontal, cant put an ounce of oil in that one before the change which i never was a fan of, i always fill my filters.....but even though you can prefill the filter they were a bullet proof motor and lasted forever
