I will be rebuilding my steering gear on my F100. I know NumbersDummy had listed them all out for us a few times on a few posts. I just spent the last hour searching through the posts and haven't been able to find the one where the industry part #'s where listed. I will be purchasing most of the parts from a N*pa parts store. If anyone has the parts numbers could you chime in? (or perhaps the numbers man?) When I do my rebuild I am going to make it a diy pictoral and post it. Hopefully there is a way it can be stickied.

I'll be watching this thread closely because this is a future project for me too.

 

"NAPA sells the parts necessary to tighten up the gearbox.
I rather doubt the parts will cost much more than 75 bucks.
You need two sector shaft bushings: B7C-3576-A
new sector shaft seal: C7OZ-3591-A (replaces B6A-3591-A)
and housing gasket: 7RC-3581
two steering shaft bearings: 68-3571-A (Industry # 5BC)
and races (one each): B-3552 (Industry #6) & 8A-3553 (Industry #6CE)
That should do it. NAPA can cross these Ford part numbers over to the brands they sell. The Industry #'s are what autoparts stores go by for bearings, races, etc.
These same parts are the only parts replaced in rebuilt gearboxes sold by autoparts stores.
While your truck is a 1960 F100, the steering shaft bearings are the same from 1936 thru 1960, one steering shaft race was used 1932 thru 1960, the other race and the housing gasket are the same from 1948 thru 1960, the seal fits most 'everything from 1948 thru 1972, the sector shaft bushings from 1957 to 1960."

This is what I finally found this morning searching the forums. I am having a hard time cross referencing the parts over to N*pa parts numbers. I can't seem to find the interchange anywhere.

Before I tore down my 60 I could turn the wheel about a quarter of the way and then it would turn the wheels. I think it needs a rebuild as well. I'll be watching this. I have never rebuilt a steering box before so don't know what to look for.

 

They are not rocket science, just pay attention as you tear it down and have a shop manual.

 

I have been looking for an original master shop manual that covers 57-60 that I can't find. Also.a kit for the steering box.

 

I just bought a shop manual on CD and I'm not sure if it has anything on the steering box. Hopefully I find something. I think there are kits around through the vendors. I ended up piecing my "kit" together with just the soft parts , gaskets and the bearings. When I open it up I will know if I need to replace the sector shaft etc. I will try to take pics of the rebuild. It truly is less involved than motor assembly (which i've done on many a motor) so It should be a fun process to learn. Hopefully I don't need a new shaft etc. It gets pricey.

I talked to someone at a junkyard recently that has older cars, and they mentioned one thing to check before the rebuild is the condition of the cab mounts, and sheetmetal of the cab supports. If there is any cab "sag" or flex under cornering etc. he mentioned it would put a bind on the column and accelerate the wear on the box/bearings and bushings. I hadn't thought about that but it makes complete sense.
