87 Ranger Glow Plugs

So, I have an 87 Ranger with the 4d55t 2.3 Mitsu diesel in it. My glow plugs have gone out in it and I'm having quite a bit of trouble locating the right ones. If anyone knows any website to buy them or part numbers or anything that would work I'd really appreciate it.

I just found a set for mine a few months ago. I came across them at a Ford dealership in rural Iowa. He said they had been on the shelf for 20 years.

Really, I called my local Ford dealership today and the parts guy had told me they were discontinued.

They are. Have been for over a decade. You have to find a dealer that has them already in stock.

If the parts house isn't listing glow plugs for your Ranger ask them to cross reference the gp's with a '83-'85 Dodge Power 50 and/or a '83-'85 Mitsubishi Mighty Max (they both share the same diesel as the '85-'87 diesel Rangers).

Hmm that's odd, I have an '83 diesel Ranger with the 2.2 Mazda diesel in it, the '83-'84 Ranger diesel uses the same gp's as the '82-'85 Mazda B2200 diesel, I thought the same parts cross over would apply in your case too.

My glow plugs are 6 Volt as well. They are not easy to find, but they are around.

Do you happen to have the Ford part number from those gp's? I can do an obsolete parts search to see if I can round up 4 of them for the OP.

I do not. I had them at one point. After I installed them I threw the boxes away. Any Ford dealer can search for them on their parts locators. The problem is most parts guys are too lazy to search because they make no money from helping you get your part from someone else. This is how I found my glow plugs and my glow plug controller. It took several phone calls to pin them down however.

Well, after a whole bunch of searching I found a set that work. The 6 volt plugs made it sound like it wanted to start but like it wasn't quite hot enough for it. I got a set of NGK plugs (despite the bad rumors about them) and they did the trick. About 3 seconds on my push button she fired almost instantly. NGK Y-107R is the part number, so anyone else with this P.I.T.A problem can find an answer.

If you're still interested in the Motorcraft gp's the part # is E5TZ-12A342-A

There's 21 dealers through out the country who have these in stock, you can contact forum member "NumberDummy" for locations, inventory and pricing.

Yeah when I got my Ranger the wiring was screwed up bad. It was jerry rigged like you wouldn't believe. Someone had also added a push button to fire the glow plugs. Previous owner held the button to long at some point, and when we changed the glow plugs the old plugs were swollen like fat sausages. So we ordered the factory shop manuals, and put all the wiring back factory. There is no longer a button for the plugs. Everything is automatic when you turn they key on.

Yes I agree. The Motorcraft plugs have worked wonders for me. Hey Montana_Highboy, ironically my last highboy I pucked up last summer I brought back from Northwest Montana! CREW cab 4x4. Love your state...

Thanks 62FE4x4, I live up in the Northwest corner (Libby area) we have a lot of nice old Fords up in this neck of the woods...

The highboy CC you bought didn't happen to be primer gray or camo did it? we use to have two that were local that fit that description but I no longer see them around.
