1966 f250. 352 w/Cruise o matic. I know there was a recall, but they only went back to 80 I think. Dose anyone know of a fix or what the dealers did to those newer ones to fix this and better lock the shifter in park?
Mine does it, and I have adjusted linkage etc.. still never sure it's ok. I always start in Neutral to insure it wont drop into reverse. The kid brother learned the hard way. Luckily he was in the seat not standing by door with a cig waiting for warm up. I have decided to stay on top of the e-brake and chock the wheel.
Pappa, I think parking pawl might be what you are referring to. I believe it is a part inside the case that holds the lever in position. Others here would be better versed than I and will be along shortly. You could also stop at a neighborhood local tranny shop and ask there.

No recall on any of these trucks, as there was no such thing back then. First recall affecting FoMoCo vehicles was the exploding Pinto gas tank fiasco that occurred in 1975.
What you're referring to...is not a defect, it's caused by human error. It's a somewhat common occurrence that affects all 1961/96 trucks with A/T.
People put the shift lever into Park before setting the hand brake, causing the truck to roll...just enough...that the parking pawl inside the trans locks up tight.
Now the shift lever has to be YANKED out of Park and before too long, the detent aka shift gate that the tab on the shift lever locks into between Park & Reverse...snaps off.
There was a recall on this but a statute of limitations kept older trucks out of it. Whole history is on autosafety.org . Thank you very much for the info number dummy, I will scour the junk yards and fix my park break.
