Hi Guys,

I have a 52 F2 that had a 4.86 rear gear so I replaced it with a 70 Ford 1/2 ton 9" with 3.50 gears. Now the you joint saddle on the stock rear end stuck out farther then the one on the 9". When I slid the drive shaft back into the saddle it came back about 1 1/2" or so farther. Does anyone know where I can get a slip yoke that is longer then the stock one or maybe someone can tell me how may spline it is and the size do I can try to figure out what I need. I really hate to tear mine apart just to put it back together. I was under the truck today and notice there is a little slop there and would feel better if I could get it back farther on the splines. Anyone have any idea's or a yoke that would work better for me. Thanks so much for your time and help. Dennis

Sounds to me like you need to get a longer drive shaft to correctly solve the problem. You can visit wrecking yards with a tape measure or have a drive shaft shop fab one in the right length and correct rear u-joint size at the rear. The cost would be in the neighborhood of $300, balanced, using your yoke and measurements.

 

pretty sure you need to get a longer drive shaft ..the yoke's are all nearly the same length..my Icon was a surprise ...someone will help you soon

not a lot of help ..but ..yah always try the "easy " way first ...then do it right .lol!!

 

They make several different length yokes. Measure yours and check wrecking yards, differential shops or online places like summit racing, currie, strange etc... I am talking about the rearend yoke.

 

This should maybe fix your issue.

Your right, but on this truck it is at the support or carrier bearing. The you joint bolts to the rear end and the other goes to the support bearing. It bolts to the support bearing just like it does at the rear end but the yoke slides on splines (16 spline). The yoke I have is about 6 inches long and I need one that is about 7 to 7 1/2" long. I've be looking but sure what I'm looking for. I just thought the fords of the later 50's or 60s with the long wheel base and used the 9" rear end might have a drive shaft that would work on maybe a longer slip yoke. If your diff pinion yoke was longer would it not push your existing carrier yoke back onto the splines further like it needs to be?

 

Yes, if I could find something to move it forward about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 it would be great. I just thought the slip yoke would be the best way to go.
