RISKY TRANNY REPAIR

Bought a 96 f150 with the 4r70w. Leaking between transmission and transfercase. Has been run dry a few times ..... Fix and carry on or replace transmission??? Having trouble finding a transmission. Apparently 96 only
! Anyone put a older one in a 96?

How does it operate if it's been run dry a few times?

If it's still fine, and you don't plan on keeping the truck for much longer, just replace that seal and carry on, but if you plan on keeping it..... have the whole thing rebuilt.

According to this: Ford Transmission Spotter's Guide .: Articles

The 4R70W was introduced in 1994. Assuming this is correct you could source a used transmission from a 1994 or later model truck.

I don't know how accurate that list is. My old '93 V6 explorer had a 4R70W...

I'm not exactly sure where the leak is but if it's between the back of the transmission and the driveshaft then I'd just replace the seal.

How many miles are on it?

If you're going to be doing this yourself, just go ahead and drop the transfer case and replace the gasket between the tranny and transfer case.

I'm pretty sure the 4R70W was introduced mid way through '93 for F-Series trucks since it had the more desirable gear ratios for a truck than the AODE does. But, I could be wrong. And I don't know off the top of my head which years will interchange, because there's always the chance that there could be internal wiring harness changes.

If there are any differences between 95 and 96, I bet they are electrical only. Both of those transmissions will use the older method of internal wiring, which is to use actual wires. 98+ 4R70W's have a plastic tray with individual conductors instead of using individual wires.

So if there are any electrical differences, they would likely be things like different EPC solenoid, TCC solenoid, etc. Different not in shape, but rather by impedance. I know I had to swap a few components around when replacing my 97 4R with a 98 model.

Honestly though, I really don't think there is a difference between 95/6. I'd do the swap. If there is a difference, it wouldn't be hard to fix.
