My Excursion is in need of some AC work. It doesn't cool well in the hot summer heat. I have added R134a to it when the compressor was cycling on and off between every 5 seconds or so. I got it to cycle much less after charging it, but it slowly returned back.

So anyone with any good recommendations for an AC shop other than the dealerships?

Sounds like the AC clutch needs adjusting. This is something you can do at home if you want. Our own SpringerPop has a write up on that.

Thanks, Trey. I'm not so sure it's the AC clutch. When I put more R134a into the system, it stops and holds the low end pressure at about 27 psi. No more compressor cycling every 5 seconds.

I think I have a leak somewhere.

 

Thanks, guys. I'll give John a call and see. I've seen his shop before just driving around town. Never thought about it thinking it was a diesel shop and I own a gasser.

Good to know if I ever get a diesel truck.

I'll see what he can do for my AC. I would like to do it on my own, but AC work may just be too complicated...especially if you need a license or something to handle larger amounts of refrigerants? Just guessing. Plus I have no way of evacuating the system...that I'm aware of.

 

Don't let the diesel part fool you. I have seen plenty of gassers in there the couple times I've been by the shop.

Did you get your A/C taken care of?

 

Not yet. I did stop by his shop on Saturday and he did take a quick look out in the parking lot. Saturdays are by appointment only. Didn't see anything obvious so he told me he can evacuate the refrigerant and pump it back in with a dye to check for leaks. $45 plus any extra R134a he needs to pump in to diagnose. The we take it from there on what needs to be fixed/replaced.

I'll drop it off sometime this week after work. He's open until 7 pm. Told him he take his time if he needs it as this is not my daily vehicle. Just want to get it ready for the camping season.

Thanks for the tip. Good guys there. Very straight forward and helpful. I like mechanics like that. Had one near my office a few years back, unfortunately, he had a heart attack and passed away.

 

Update.

Had Domestic Diesel evacuate the system and put an additional 2.75 lbs. of R134a. They didn't find any obvious signs of a leak. They put in a dye so it will show if there was a leak. AC is running cold. We'll have to monitor it, but it seems good to go now.

Great guys there. Only charged me for the refrigerant. Told the guys there they can take their time with it if they needed. This is not a daily vehicle for me.
