Vin # problems 1963 Uni S/B

Hi all.
I bought a 1963 Uni short bed project truck about 5 years ago off a guy who never registered it when he bought it. He had the signed transfers, but lost the registration paper. So I contacted the 2nd previous owner and he agreed to get a new copy of the registration. So I'm putting together a package of forms with the VIN ect. all filled out so all he has to do is sign off.

The problem I have is the Vin looks wrong (see photo) You guys say it should start with a F10XXXXXX mine is 96642A-4661014L

To further confuse me, my son just bought a 1961 Uni s/b, he has the registration, but no VIN tags are on the cab. His registration paper shows VIN # is 4661014L117125A all one # no dash in the middle and his first 7 digits are the same as my last ! I need to know what the correct VIN # is to enter on the paperwork. Thanks Jim

Need to get in touch with the NumberDummy. The number reversed from 61 to 63.
I can halfway decode, but I dont have the books to finish it.

Your trucks where built up in Canada and have a different numbering system than the US trucks.

The 63 what is the original paint color? 1HH says it would be a solid color truck but I cant find HH in the charts. If your truck had been shipped from the US it would have started with F10 and the DSO would have been B7.

Thanks for the help, and pointing out the reverse vin's between 61-63 now it's starting to all make sense. So do all Canadian trucks have no VIN tag in thje glove box? Is the frame VIN the complete # or oly part of it? Thanks again. Jim

I have decoded it this far
4 - Ford V8
661 - ??
0 - F100
14 - 114" wb
L - left hand drive
(both mine and my sons are the same)
96642 - ??
A - 5000 gvw

here is a photo of when we brought the 63 home

661 should be just 66. 66 is integral cab (unibody). Then 10 would make it a f100.

nice little S/B...always a diamond in the rough hiding somewhere !
before i found FTE and heard of number dummy i had always called ford archives. in 1980 i bought a 62 ford uni longbed and drove it home, once i realised what i had i wanted to know more. at the time they could verify production and even that it was a mid week build(not sure if he was yanking my chain )
there is alot of helpful people here and good info.

as a side note..do all these unibody projects start on the same trailer

ps. my unis are canadian built

10 series code refers to either Ford or Mercury 100. The Canadian Rating Plate (as you can see in post 1) has the SERIES listed by itself, specifies which is which.

A = 3,600-5,000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.

1966 (1967/68) Mercury & Ford trucks assembled in Canada use the same Warranty Plate/codes and 11 digit VIN as US trucks.

I can decode all the 1965 Ford/Mercury Canadian Rating Plate codes using the 1964/72 truck catalog., but not prior years.

1946/64: Specific year(s) Ford Motor Co. of Canada Ltd parts catalog is required. Only catalog like this I have is 1953.

mercurypickups.com has some of this info.

So it could have read M100 , and would have a 1 or 5 to denote mercury v8 or mercury I-6?

VIN (1965) could begin with 1, 4, 5, 6 as all are gassers.

But these are Ford engines, not Merc's. Specific to Mercury only engine used in the '60's:

FE 410 installed in 1966/67 Mercury Parklanes. Why the hell did FoMoCo bother? 390, 427, 428 were also available.

I dunno, I've only seen one of these trucks in person, it was parked in a driveway on Cattle Point Rd. in Friday Harbor, San Juan Island WA

I know the Mercury FE cars came with Merc valve covers, but once removed...what do you have? A Ford engine!
