I got tired of trying to pack all of my tools in the trunk of my car so went shopping. Decided 4wd was a must. Couldn't afford payments on a new Ford truck so started watching for good used trucks. Driving past a Ford dealership I spotted a 76 bronco sitting for sale. Test drove it, looked it over, and bought it in 1992 with 52K miles for $2900. It was the kind of ugly that grows on you. It was the best money I have ever spent on a set of wheels. I still own it and have since owned probably 20 since then. Currently I have my '76, '78, '84, '88 and a '91. Within the last 10 years I have started modding a couple of them. The list on my '91 is getting longer. Working on them has taught me plenty.

Not going to Bubba it up? What are you saying!? Just kidding that's a nice truck there.

That's a lot of Broncos! I'll admit, when I get my own place, I'll have a few more vehicles. I'm hoping I can get a place with a decent amount of land, and can afford to have a 3+ garage or more! I know I'd like at least one other Bronco. You don't seem to have the latest Bronco Body style though, I think you need to hurry up with that!

I would love/need a nice shop. At leas 1 lift bay and a normal bay.

I would also love another Bronco, either another 78/9 or earlier are preferred but I wouldn't mind a later one as well.

our story!

My father bought our bronco from the original owner back in 1990. its a 1978 with a 351. over the years it was his daily driver til like about 10 years ago when he decided to not use it but to give it a needed upgrade and repaint it . she has bad luck with mechanics and body shops so she is still sitting in need of some love she runs and drives. but since we don't drive it often, she regularly has problems with one thing or the other.. as of right now she has ford 302 for better milage on the highway, mated to the original c6.she is black in color and is sporting some 35" tires i want to keep it in our family and pass it down to my kids when the time comes. we always been a ford family. we currently have a 1999 f 250, 2001 escape, 1989 f350 dually diesel 7.3idi, and a 1997 ford e350 rv.

Might be a 302 in which case it is not mated to the original c6, because a 302 wont bolt up to a 351m/400 c6. Probably not a 302 anyhow. A lot of changes needed to put a 302 into a 78 Bronco for no gain.

I have seen quite a few 302s in '79 F100 and F-150s where they're not particularly weak. I had a friend with an '86 F-250 longbed we used to drive across the country with an AOD behind it and it would achieve 16-17 mpg on a carb. I would think that with a well built EFI 302 and a 4R70W transmission behind it, it wouldn't do too poorly in a Bronco, but it would require a bit of work to make the torque needed.

my father told me he had to change the bell housing on it to work with that engine. and the transmission is a c6 and the engine a ford 302.

Yes when i get to a start i does take longer then usual cause of the weight of these bronco but once in the highway it keeps up with traffic. i average between 12-15 miles .

So you're running 35" tires and achieving 12-15 mpg in a '78? Is the truck lifted at all?

This goes back to 1990 when I drove a brand spanking new XLT off the lot for the first time. I had been shopping for a new truck and just couldn't find anything that would make me part with my hard earned dollars. I was in my late 20's at the time and asked my pop if he wanted to take a few test drives with me. He was always a car guy, so I knew he'd tag along. We hit a Jeep dealer and a Chevy dealer first. Drove a new Cherokee and wasn't too impressed. No way I could afford a Grand Wagoneer. Looked at a couple of Chevy pick em ups and took one for a spin. Not too shabby and it was in the running. Just for kicks, there was a Ford dealer that was close, so we stopped. Figured I would take a Bronco for a spin. So we hopped in an took it for a drive. After about a minute, I looked at him and said, "What do you think?" He said, "This is the one" and I totally agreed. It was head and heels above everything else we looked at. I wound up having the dealer find one with the equipment I wanted and a week later, I was driving in style. From a Toyota 4X pickup with no power, to a 90 Bronco that was a pleasure to drive. Drove it for 6 years and enjoyed it, but between the onset of rust, paint issues and more than a few mechanical issues, I finally sold it.
