Also on the topic of oil, ALL oils have to pass a benchmark, often times what you have to look for is what they ADD to the oil, not what they leave out Penzoil for instance..*shudders*

Fuel economy though, being SWB and OD id say 20 is not unreasonable if everything is in good shape, especially with 3.55s

Oil topic

I have used Rotella on my diesel and it worked fine, I have used synthetic oils and I found that Amsoil works better than royal purple or Castro synthetic oils.

Delo 400 15/40 with 2 quarts mobile 1, 0-40 M full synthetic, it the only oil that Mercedes will use in there diesel engine cars, it meets all the European oil standards, and mobile 1 601 power stroke filter, its bigger, and has duel filtration 5 micron and 16 micron. 14-16 mpg, the girls pull horses at 60mph. 4.10 rear, e4od, low stall converter.

About 15 mpg in my 88 F-250 7.3/5-speed/4.10/4x4 reg cab. That's doing 70-75 mph on highway 75% of the miles and 25% city. I have approx 32 inch tall all-terrain tires. The 4x4 will not get as good mpg as a 2wd, and bigger off-road type tires also will hurt mpg some. I could probably get better mpg if I drove slower.

been averaging 12.7 lately with the 92, very slowly, steadily getting worse. Swapped pump and injectors off an engine that ran great, no difference. Currently timed at 8* BTDC via pulse adapter. Not sure if i want to compression test it or not lol. Granted, most all the miles are 75-80mph or stop / go city driving, but used to get 14.5

1989 F-450 11ft Flatbed

I recently put 285/75r16s mounted on 16x8 wheels on it. I have two 15 gallon tanks, as well. I'm not sure about the gears, though. I'm not going to be towing anything, just driving it. I won't be going on the highway much of ever, either. Just around here on country roads and all that. Can anybody give me an estimate of the fuel mileage I should expect with this truck? The guy who sold it to me said around 16 mpg, but I wanna be sure. Thanks!
I am looking to buy an 89' F-450 11ft flatbed 7.3L 5 speed manual w/ regular cab. I don't know the rear-end size or the tire size. Does anyone know the range for the MPG on this truck? It will be a daily driver and to pull my 23' bumper pull RV.

Thanks for the advice,
Emily Shelton

you have a F-SuperDuty, not a F450 f450 did not start production until 1999
unfortunately that truck is going to be a fuel hog. there were two gear ratio options on the F-SuperDuty, 4.63 and 5.13, 4.63 was kind of rare.

Mine gets around 10 mpg with a 16' stake bed. E4OD + 5.13 options. Aftermarket turbo and intercooler.

Just to chime in here, I have a 85 F-250HD with 4.10 rear end gears and a 6.9 paired with a C6 transmission. I get 12 on a good day, kills the pocket but I love the truck. If I could find a cheaper way to get more economy out of it I would it in a heartbeat. Anybody know why I cant get these numbers that sound like a pipe dream to me? Oh and I should add it's a reg cab long bed 4x4.

The old C6 is your enemy. Tough as nails but no OD and no locking converter just makes the old dinosaur impractical for a daily driver in this day and age.....Unless you only drive a few miles per day or something anyway. An E4OD swap would probably cost more than just buying a newer truck with one but a ZF5 swap would be worthwhile if you drive the truck a lot. Don't forget about the option of running a small 4 cyl car to go with the trucks. I go with this option so I can travel and scoot around cheap. I mean you can't get 30+ mpg from a truck,so.

it's probably that 4.10 killing your mileage ...my old 83 with C6 Regular Cab always got around 20 on the highway didn't matter full or empty same fuel mileage .. had the 3.55 in it too and I always wanted another gear.. but back in the day 55 was the limit .... gotta keep yer foot out of it.

Maybe you IP timing ain't right too....

12 MPG is really low that's more like what a 460 Gashog gets. Som Ting Wong

I will add that 4X4 always got worse mileage than the RWD and dually is less economical too.

not really wolfie.
4.10 gears C6 trans and 40 cetane fuel is only going to give up around 12-14 mpg.
back in the good old days when we had 60+ cetane fuel my 4X4 with C6 and 4.10 gears could see 20 -22 regularly if i was granny drive on the interstate. but not these days with the watered down crap they are calling diesel fuel.

yeah you make a very valid point there.. one reason I mention IP timing... as there is for sure less BTU in diesel today ... but they sure charge like there is Twice the BTU as it used to have

I just recently checked my fuel cetane and I'm at 49-52 in my tank right now.. it's Valero Diesel and it's over a year old.... I will be filling up again here pretty soon as I need to take the truck for State inspection.

If the cetane is that much lower from what it used to be and makes that much difference milage wise, wouldn't that make cetane booster cost effective?
