Just registered today.

I have been poring over forums from all sites and I thought that FTE had the best info out there. It’s good to be here!
So I have been doing a lot of home work for this build. Still have a few questions though, I’ll get to those in a min. there are a couple of options that I’m considering for the rebuild. But no matter what way I end up going I plan on building off the F4TE block, and I’ll be able to drive the truck in the process.
I know right off the bat I want to change to MA from SD. The question here is what ECU to go with since I have the e4od tranny. I have seen the kit that they have but for $600 I’ll make the injector harness and reconfigure the pins. Most of the kits sell a Mustang A9I for the autos and I’ll have to get a separate controller for the tranny.(what’s a good one to have) If I get one out of a 94-95 Bronco, F-series or E-series that has the e4od and CA smog its almost plug-in and play. But is there a defenses in the tuning capabilities between the two for performance?
First motor/goals=350/400
4FTE block-shot block $70 or $275 L/B (dismaler)

Most of the same that goes into the first motor just buy a stroker kit, don’t know what one though 393/408. I have a parts guy at napa that gives me the best deal that the system will yet him so I’m not worried about the bearings rings….ect. As for the stroker kit I read somewhere that up to a 4.00 stroke that does not see hi rpm does not have to be internally balanced. These kits are a little chipper but if it makes a big difference I’ll go with what I need to the first time.
If someone could give me the hp/tq ratings both will have to be in a D/D. And help me out with the cam, lifters and such it will be greatly appreciated
For the tanny I’m looking at getting a 96 to rebuild.

First, ALL stroker kits need to be balanced, unless specifically bought with crank rods pistons and rings already balanced.

Second, a 393 is usually cheaper, and a 408 isn't going to net you much extra.

3rd, cam choice depends on displacement and roller rocker ratio depends on cam.

4. Mass air can be retrofitted to your truck somewhat easily if you are good at wiring and reading a diagram. Just find any maf truck with an e4od and get the ecu, harness, knock sensor(not needed but nifty to have) airbox, maf harness, few other things. There are tons of write ups about the swap. Get the stuff then ask more questions if you need clarification on one of the writeups.

If you're going for 350/400 I'd suggest 30lb injectors. I hate going too small and like not having to upgrade later.

Stock distributor is fine.

Block needs machining for new pistons with any complete rebuild kit. Get pistons then bring block and pistons to get it bored and honed.

You won't have any problem making 350hp/400tq from a 357, and while a stroker can make lots more Tq and hp it'll burn more fuel driving around town. With an E4OD you'll want a mass air 5.8 PCM ideally and with a tuner on it you can use any engine configuration you want. There are a few engine built threads going on this forum so have a look around to get an idea.

Second, you should be prepared to use a tuner for this, it sounds like you'll end up there. With that in mind, you can get a PCM that will control the E40D and you can program the shift points in the PCM with the tuner, or not.

Ok this might be a stupid question....but would it be easier to get all the mass air stuff in socal while i still live here. moving to spokane wa in a few months.

how much hp/tq would be left on the table if i went with a different set of heads?

You'll get it balanced 28 or 50oz. Being a stroker they tend to go with 28 (same as 351 and 84/86 and lower 302)
Just let the machine shop do their job. If it is out of whack a lot they will do 50oz but otherwise it will be 28.

This passed weekend pick your part had a 50% off sale. So got was able to grab a few things in the chaos. Got a couple of clusters w/tachs for $12.50, a pair of F3ZE-AA heads for $50. could not pass up. I did get the air box mass air housing and sensor, the wiring harness out of a 92 5.8 but just up to the block on the inner finder(thought that making the over lay harness would be easier on the bench) having a tough time with the ecu and finding a mass air harness that has not been all hacked up

will a 5.0 harness work on a 5.8 ecu?

Speed density 302 and 351 harness are nearly identical other than the 302 has a knock sensor. The mass air computer you'll use is more than likely be a 302 computer. "Oldfordfuelinjection.com" has the wiring diagrams you'll need.
Good thinking on a whole extra harness. You'll be able to add the wires more easily that way.
Mass air donor can be most anything. Grab a mass air plug off any oval shaped mass air plug ford car. You'll also be able to use any act plug as well. Then get an injector harness from an 89-92 tbird or any 89+ mustang. You'll just need to lengthen the wires, but the harness will be all made for you.

Lots of repinning of the ecu. Label your wires as you remove them. Keep track of where they were and what it is.

So if the only difference is the knock sensor(would b nice) where would i locate it on the 5.8?
As far as the harness do u have to repin the block thats on the inner finder too ir just pass it by to the ecu?

Knock sensor on a 302 is above the bellhousing at the back of the motor.
You don't need it. Most 351 blocks don't have the spot threaded for it anyway.
Just grab the sensor and plug, add wires to it so that you can get it to the ecu plug.

The main plug and fuse block won't be modified. Only the ecu plug will need pins rearranged.

What is that?

The additional wires you need for MAF have to go all the way back to the computer so if you're building an overlay harness you may as well bypass the block connectors.

I see you mentioned fuel injectors, but no mention of the rest of the fuel system. Can't just throw in a big set of injectors and have at it. I tried that on my HCI 302 in my Mustang. Stock fuel pump definitely doesn't feed enough fuel for a 350 HP motor, at least not in a Mustang.

Very true.
An adjustable regulator and a 255lph high pressure pump is most desirable.
A 190lph is minimum.
There are a few other things that will come up. These threads aren't always 100%. But that's also why you use the search function and read what the hundreds of other guys have done, and not expect that your thread gets all the answers.
