Any thoughts on an '02 that's been sitting for a couple years?
Story goes as follows:
Guy parks his 2002 F350 crew cab, long bed 4x4, auto (200k miles) in a storage lot (close to $100 a month) for almost 2 years. Says he originally parked it in the fall because the apt he lived in didn't have a plug available to plug it in during the winter months. Said he drove it in, but it had a oil leak at the pan gasket when parked. Batteries dead, some rust on rear fenders and all lower doors, needs tires too. Interior is so-so. Utility box on bed with ladder rack, so I can't see the condition of the bed. Claims it runs and drives.
Wants $4000.
Appears to be a nice truck with a little work, but I'm nervous about not being able to hear it run and drive it. Says he'll bring it to the dealer and get it running, but the price goes up $1000.
What do you guys think? Worst case scenario, how much am I out if it needs a replacement engine or tranny? I'm sure I wouldn't be out much, but not sure if it would end up being a real good deal?
Should have kept my 92!
Thanks,
Eric

Tranny will cost a few bucks. $2000.00 would be on the real cheap side. A sitting vehicle, outside, is the worst thing you can do to one. I would have major concerns with fuel system, brake system, electrical system, the whole nine yards. Specifically, brake lines, frozen brake calipers, any and all electrical plugs, fuel lines corroding, possible bacteria growing in the fuel tank. 200,000 miles, will likely need injectors in the near future. What about the exhaust system? Any mice build any nests in it? I would check the intake box BEFORE I try to start it, just in case. Test the anti-freeze for the PH level. $4000.00 to buy it may be the cheap part of this truck. It may be OK as well, but I would go over this with a fine tooth comb before making an offer on it.

Bought my 01 with 58,800 miles on it. The first owner sold it to the used car dealer no trade. Was able to talk to the owners. It sat for most of its life. Hauled a 40' horse trailer and went to the dump and feed store. When I bought it. It went into the shop were it had the oil pan replaced, all brake components was well lines, both locking hubs, 6 tires and other parts I can't remember. The total bill was over $3,000. The dealer ate the whole bill. Thank God. Still having small problems because of rust.
Good luck in what you do.

Motorbug sat for 4 years without so much as a turn of the key.
New batts and she fired up on that 4 year old full tank of fuel without missing a beat.
There were issues with orings and seals and up pipes and a really tired turbo...
But with really minimal expense and a whole lot of love from the Brotherhood...
Motorbug is a very happy truck.
406k miles on all but 3 factory injectors... 2 more are really complaining tho
If it runs and drives i wouldnt pass it up at 4k if i could help it.
