What controls the 4x4 dash lights? Dealer does not know
Ok having trouble with a truck I just bought. 4x4 dash lights do not come on for any reason. Not even at key on. 2003 F250 Lariat ESOF.
Checked relay and fuses.... 4x4 works, but no dash light.
Took it to dealer who said it was a problem with the gauge cluster. They wanted $800 to replace it with another one. I went in and picked up the cluster, sent it to Circuit Board Medics who tested it. They said the gauge cluster works fine and they got the 4x4 lights to work with their scan tool.
Dealer says they tried their scan tool to command them on, could not get them to work, so they thought bad cluster. I think that logic is flawed because if something is bad preventing the lights from coming on, hooking a scan tool up to it wont turn them on either.
So right now I am $220 in labor with the dealer and $130 into circuit board medics for shipping and testing. And still don't know what's wrong.
I called the dealership to tell them the cluster is good and the female service advisor seemed a little offended. I'm considering taking it somewhere else.

Thanks! Looks like I can pick one up for $27 bucks from Toulsey. Do you know how difficult it is to install? I live in an apartment with no garage. And is this connected to the shift motor on the tcase or something different?

So I will have the cluster back tomorrow.
I asked the dealer if they tested that switch. They said yes and have power and ground all the way to the cluster.
ugh... the company I sent the cluster to had no problems getting the 4x4 lights to work so I tend to believe them, and think it is a problem with the truck.
I'm going to try and replace that switch and hope for the best. Could it be anything else?

I put that part number into Toulsey Ford which says it has been superseded by BC3Z7E440A. I gave that number to another Ford dealer to buy it locally and they said it was a transmission temp sensor ???
