EBPV TURBO PEDESTAL? Wicked Wheel 2 install?

So I'm in the process of a pretty big install on my 03 excursion 7.3... I have 2 questions... First, I'm installing a banks exhaust with power elbow which eliminates the actual ebpv on the exhaust side of the turbo but this still leaves the actuator assembly in the pedestal... I replaced the o-ring on the end plate to the ebpv and reassembled it even thou it won't serve any purpose from now on... Is it necessary to get a pedestal with it deleted? Or am I ok just to leave it there and unhooked and unused?

Question 2, while installing the wicked wheel 2 I have the front part of the turbo off and the instructions show the exhaust side housing removed and say to clamp the exhaust side turbine end in a bench vise and remove using a socket on the turbo side... Question is I can't figure out how to get the exhaust housing off without taking off the inner side of the turbo side and I can't figure out how to get it off either... I see bolts but can't get to them... Much help would be obliged.

Thanks!
Rick

Some say the EBPV pedestal WILL eventually start to leak if you just leave it there like you are doing. That's why when I went to the van turbo, I included a blank pedestal in the install.

If you want to remove the compressor wheel without taking the whole turbo out of the truck, the only way I know of doing it is it use an impact wrench. I have a pneumatic impact that I use. It will loosen the compressor wheel from it's shaft without having hold the exhaust wheel from moving.

Besides the possibility of leaking later on it will be fine the way it is, you don't even have to unplug it.

You can remove the guts from the pedestal and plug the holes...in effect making your own blank pedestal.

What should i use to plug the holes and how many holes are there? I see the two holes behind the c-clip plate and one that has the shaft protruding from it... are there others that need to be plugged or just these three?

From dieselsite.com's web page for the wicked wheel 2

"DO NOT USE AN IMPACT WRENCH TO CHANGE TURBO WHEELS! Impact wrenches cause stress fractures in the shaft that will cause failure either very soon or thousands of miles down the road. It's like a crack in your windshield that grows over time. Take your time and remove the turbo, hold onto the turbine shaft and remove the compressor wheel with an open end wrench."

This is why I am doing it the way i am doing it per the instructions from dieselsite, Also I decided to reread the instructions and it says that I can infact get to the bolts that i just need to use a boxed end wrench 12pt and lots of penetrant before hand.

I snapped a pic of the exhaust housing so you can see where the bolts are, hope it helps- good luck.

There is only two more bolts to take the turbo out. Remove it and make it easier. You need to torq the 12 point bolts and use lock tite on them. Some guys stick a screw driver in the exhaust outlet with a rag on it to hold the wheel while loosening the compressor wheel. Let us know how you like it when done.

I ended up abandoning the instructions idea of taking the four 12 pt bolts out because when i got to the fourth bolt it was froze solid, tried to heat, and multiple rounds of penetrant and finally the bolt started to strip. So i tightened the other three back up and gave dieselsite a call, they said to get a pair of flat jawed vicegrips and turn them long ways and grab the circular centerportion of the exhaust side turbine (not the veins) and clamp it as tight as possible, after 3 or 4 times of it slipping off i got a good grip on it and was able to crack the stock turbine loose, after cracked loose i could spin it off by hand. see the pics below. Again they said DO NOT USE AN IMPACT WRENCH TO REMOVE THE STOCK TURBINE WHEEL; that with patients it will come off. IT WAS A BITCH but it did come off eventually, i had to remove the 6 12pt bolts holding the ebpv assembly on, i then reinstalled the bolts 2 or 3 threads and used the bolts to hold the vicegrips in place once clamped to the center part of the exhaust side turbine.

Stock Gt38 turbine removed

Turbo pedestal with plug installed, had to remove some material to get the plug to sit flush

New wicked wheel 2 installed; will of course clean up real good before final reassembly

Looks good!

I would like to mention to be careful tightening and loosening the nut on the turbine shaft. With a wrench and holding the exhaust side you put lateral force on the cold side of the shaft which can bend it. I have seen it done.
