New 2013 F150

Hi this is my first post on here but i have been following without an account for awhile.

I'm looking into buying a new truck, either a 2013 F150 with the 6.2L or a 2013 Chevy 1500 with the 6.2L. are there a lot of problems with the new F150? i've never bought a new vehicle, i've always gone used, so i really want to make sure that this will be a good purchase.

thanks for any replies that can help me out

Reid

Welcome to FTE. In my opinion, the F150 is one of the best built vehicles on the road. Yes, there are some trucks that experience issues, but I think that is going to be the case with every vehicle. I definitely think the Ford is a much better truck than the Chevrolet.

Welcome!! In my not so humble opinion, Ford is the only little truck made. I don't think I'm too biased, do you?

The Silverado 1500 was recently redesigned for the 2014 model year with new engines and everything. I personally wouldn't buy a 2013 Silverado, simply because it's already outdated.

As far as Ford vs GM with the current trucks, you really can't go wrong with either. If you are going to use your truck like a truck, I'd rather have Fords 6.2L, as it's definitely a heavier duty engine. If you are going to use your truck like a car, I think I'd rather have GM's engine, as it's lighter in weight with an aluminum block, which makes for a slightly more nimble truck. Other than that, you really have to drive both and see what you like better.

thanks for the quick replies. I would be using the truck for mainly offroad/mudding and camping and as my daily driver. Ive had a trucks with the smaller motors and it was aggravating when going offroad because the engine had no push behind it. Am I going overkill with the 6.2?

I don't think so, but I've got the 5.0 that seems to have enough guts for most things. Engine wise, I'm happy with it.

For obvious reasons, most of us are going to tell you to buy Ford (myself included), but if you are unsure, test drive them both. That's the only way to get a better idea what's right for you.

5.0 For mudding should be more than plenty. Heck the Eco boost has the low end to get you out of some holes. Do you plan on doing any serious towing?

The 6.2 has lots of power, but gets relatively poor fuel economy. Most seem to get around 16 on the highway and it goes down from there. The ecoboost has similar power (torque really), but better fuel economy. The 5.0l offers around the same fuel economy as the Ecoboost, but has a bit less torque than the other two (though I think it's the best sounding of the three).

With that said, I doubt any of them would leave you wanting more power. Even the 5.0 hauls *** with 360hp/380ft-lbs tq, you just can't be afraid to put your right foot down (it really likes that!). I would test drive all three of them. Then, if you want to test drive an underpowered engine, give GM's 5.3l a whirl. Their 6.2l has power to spare, but the current 5.3l is a total dog.

We use the EcoBoost, 5.0, and the 6.2 in our business. The ecoboost pulls as well as the 6.2 while towing and will outrun it when not towing. The EB has more torque at lower rpm than the 5.0 and 6.2 and would do well off-road. While towing our 8000 pound trailers all three motors get about 11 mpg but the EB does it at much lower rpm than the other two. While driving without a trailer, the EB gets about 5 mpg more than the 6.2 and about 1 mpg more than the 5.0. All three Ford engines kick the snot out of the Chevy 5.3's we have in the fleet. Any of the three would make you happy I think.

I wouldn't be doing any towing with it. Maybe the occasional camper or utility trailer.

I'd shoot for an Ecoboost then. Seems to fit your needs.

Prior to buying '13 Plat 4X4 5.0, I had the opportunity to purchase and drive a 2011 Raptor with 6.2 . Long story, but a friend of mine and I bought it to be eventually used overseas.

Anyway, I thought I really wanted a Raptor for my wife (our daily driver). That being said, after driving the Raptor every day for a couple of weeks, I knew that the F150 with 5.0 would be better for us.

Rather than pay the additional $3490 for the 6.2 option, would it make more sense to purchase a like new Raptor???

No better vehicle for Off Road. We didn't get it because we don't do much off road stuff; and the Plat was much better for daily driving, etc.

Of course there is no rebate $$ on Raptors. You could get a new FX4 with the 5.0 and take advantage of the Factory Rebates and have a great vehicle. After driving the 5.0 for a month now, it's a great engine with plenty of power for all applications.
