Rebuilding my 4R100

I'm pulling the transmission out of my truck tomorrow to rebuild it. I will try and take some pictures as I go along.

This is awesome, I am going to rebuild my tranny here soon since I cant afford to have a new one put in. Who did you buy your parts from? I was referred to Roadrunner and Sonnax

I purchased my rebuild kit for my e4od from Sonnax, really liked the quality of the parts. Updated from aluminum to steel parts and it was awesome with the TransGo tugger shift kit

I sourced the parts from multiple vendors. I didn't go with any of the packaged re-build kits. I found it more cost effective to do it this way and I could have a choice of every part.

Transfer case out:

Got the pig pulled out:

I'm starting the tear down of the transmission today.

Cool.

Do you already have all the tools you need or are you going to fab them yourself?

I borrowed a home made center support tool from a friend but so far I haven't needed any special tools. They would probably make it easier but not required.

I was told around 500lbs with the T case but I'm not sure. It's certainly heavier than the last AOD I rebuilt.

Pan and vale bodies removed:

Got the pump out with a slide hammer:

I removed the coast clutch drum and found damage. Upon further inspection it looks like my over drive snap ring popped out and caused the over drive clutch piston return spring to come loose. I think by that happening it caused the friction and steele teeth to eat up the coast clutch drum. Apparently this is a common problem on the 4R100 and I'm lucky I caught it before it did a lot more damage.

Damaged coast carrier drum:

The o/d snap ring that failed. You can see the damage on it as well:

I find it easier to line up tables and set everything in order.

So now it's back to finding parts to replace the damage and an updated o/d snap ring so it doesn't pop out again.

500 pounds is probably a little high, but not much. I'm not certain what a transfer case weighs. I'd guess around 150 pounds. The transmission weighs 270 pounds.

The new coast clutch and O/D snap ring should be here tomorrow. After work I'm going to clean up the transmission case and give it a good coat of Ford blue.
