F250 Diesel "Wrench" warning symbol

2010 F-250, 25000 miles...towing an 8K camper up a moderate hill at around 60 mph when the "wrench" symbol comes on the dash immediately followed by "engine power reduced" and it was not kidding....lost most of my power barely making the top of the hill....pulled over, shut down and sat for about 15 minutes, calling Ford Road Service..fired it up and all appeared normal...about an hour later the same thing happened. Pulled her over and shut down, restarted and made it on to our destination about 30 miles further. The Road Service person made arrangements with the nearest Ford dealer to see me in the morning.

Any ideas concerning this issue and what insight I need to know when dealing with Ford service? The truck is under warranty, but I would like to know something in advance so I am not totally at the mercy of the Tech to tell me anything.

Any replies would be more helpful if addressed to bearcreekman@gmail.com

Thanks.

Could be any of a number of PCM codes thrown. However going up a hill with a trailer the two most likely that I know are either over boost (where you have shifted down into a higher gear and increased rpm and boost above 40PSI, or Exhaust Gas temperatures (greater than 1400 degrees, I think)

It is a powertrain fault..that is the reason for the reduced power.

Hard to say, EGR valve or electronics could do this. So could a number of things.

My guess would be a P0088 code for the HPFP. With the lastest flashes they set the monitor for the HPFP too low so under some heavy loads it maybe calling for more fuel. More than is currently being supplied. Hence the code.

They will probably reflash it and see if that helps.

Could be an over boost too. What level of boost were you seeing before the reduced power?

Thanks all, for your replies and information. Boost at the time was not more than 30 PSI and considering an 8K load up a moderate Alabama hill should have been a non-issue. We will find out this morning.

I had it happen twice. The second time was 5000 miles later and it was a stuck EGR valve. It stayed stuck the second time. If you drive it long enough you will have a blocked particulate filter.

Power Loss--F-250

Had it to Ford Service this AM, was told, after checking codes, that this issue was attributed to a recall that was performed a year or so ago where something computer related was updated. Don't really know how that could have an effect at this time, but I am no engine Tech. Was told when leaving the dealer that all was taken care of. We shall see.

Thanks again for all your input.

P0088 was the code as I said above. They tightened the parameters too much. So this flash corrects that.
