1950 F5 Introduction

Hi guys. I would like to introduce myself here. Although I have owned F150s and Rangers for years, I have recently acquired a 1950 F5. It is tired, and needs a little attention, but looks to be worth the effort to save it.

I have a 1986 Ranger in the shop now for an engine/driveline swap. Once it's finished, I will start giving the F5 a little love.

Hey 'dale!

We'll like you a whole lot more here if you share pics!!! Also, what are your plans for this beauty? Any story on the F5?

Thanks, guys. I just picked up the truck on Monday. It's been too nasty weatherwise here in Ohio to get any pics yet.

After talking with the prior owner, his father bought it new for his sign/billboard business. It still has the ladder/crane on the bed, and has been used a few times as a parade truck in the last 10 years.

It looks pretty good from 10 feet away, but it's got an amateur paint job over some bondo. From the backside of the body panels it appears that most of the bondo is to fill in dents rather than rust through.

It's got the original flat head V8. It runs, but not very well. I believe a fuel system flush is in order. I suspect there is rust in the tank. It appears that the oil and coolant were probably changed sometime 20 years ago.

It still has the widowmaker split rims. I'll probably be looking for a set of 5x8" 19.5 tubeless rims to replace them at some point.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

Go to Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket and sign up for a free account. Then create an album for your truck. Upload any pics you want to post on FTE to that album. Have this album open on your computer when you want to post pics on FTE.

While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
The best photos and videos | Photobucket

Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).

When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).

Your pic will be placed in the post.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the instructions for uploading pictures. I'll see if I can manage it. I have one picture of the F5 that was given to me by the prior owner. It was taken last summer.

I'll take some more pics when the weather improves.

Welcome to this section. Great looking F5. There are a few of us on here that like the slightly larger trucks and the problems unique to them.

Welcome to the board!!

I gotta admire you guys working on the bigger trucks. There's a lot of different challenges to the big trucks that us regular truck guys don't have to deal with.

Can't wait to see the pics

I've restored several farm tractors, and to be honest, these old trucks aren't any more complicated, except for the extra sheet metal. The biggest challenge I've found on the 1 ton and bigger trucks is that some parts are getting hard to find because there isn't enough demand for most manufacturers to bother.

As it turns out I'm rebuilding a 1959 Massey Ferguson TO35 at the moment.

The bigger trucks are very cool....but, like you said parts are harder to find...and heavy...LOL

Amen to that. I wonder if I should spin up some billet brake drums?

That's a nice looking truck. Welcome to FTE!

It's great to see another big one being saved. Looks like you're already in great shape though. I love the bed.
