65 Headliner - Make It Look Custom For $25

I just finished installing a new headliner in my 65 F100 and it turned out pretty good. The headliner is one I got from DC and finally got around to installing as I am completing the restoration the truck.

I started to install the headliner and the "sort of white color" did not look too good with a black interior. So I went to an upholstery shop and got some black headliner covering (with the little holes); the one with the least amount of backing. It was a roll end and the owner charged me $25.00.

I glued it to the 4 pieces of the headliner with 3M spray adhesive. My 12 year old daughter and I installed it in a couple hours the next day. It was not really that much fun and all I can say is use the water and ammonia trick to get the pieces to bend into the cab corners....

I have attached a few pictures showing how it turned out. I looks like the original headliner but a lot better. This would work with any color of truck or interior as you can get headliner material in a lot of colors. And it only cost $25

Very nice work Taylor!
Did you have a problem with the headliner material "bunching up" when you bent the panels into a concave shape?

No problem at all. The headliner material bonded really well to the headliner pieces with the 3M spray adhesive I used. It did not move at all

I found that on this forum. There was a real good explanation in a posting on the science of it, but in short version the ammonia gets into the fibers of the wood and makes it more flexible. It really works well. It would almost be impossible to install a new headliner without doing this.

Just mix 4 parts water and 1 part ammonia, and spray it on the pieces that need to bend. Spray a few more times and wait 5 min

Looks great, nice job!

One thing, the 3M adhesive... if 77 will be ok for a while but after the climate changes get to it. It will dry and become brittle. Rolling on a glue like that used in a boot sole repair will stand up to the elements better.

Very nice work, however the title could be misleading. "Make it look custom for $25.00" What is the total cost for doing this? You purchased the headliner from D.C. for how much? The adhesive cost how much? Add the cost of amonia? And finally, the material you used cost $25.00? So what is total cost of this headliner? How many man hours were needed to do this project?
As I said in the beginning "Very nice work" I'm just into total cost and man hours of items needed to restore one of these trucks.
