'95 F350 Transmission Problems

I've got a 1995 automatic gas F350 with about 186,000 miles on it that I'm having a transmission problem with. It has been sitting for about a year, runs great in park and neutral but when I put it reverse or drive, it wants to kill the engine. You really have to find a fine line between gunning it and feathering it to keep it running but it only acts like this for 10-15 seconds and its like nothing ever happened, running like a dream. I've tried running it and driving it for awhile to see if it all just needed to be warmed up after sitting for about a year but it continued to do this every time I shifted from either neutral or park to either reverse or drive. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Trevor

Doesn't attempt to move stalls out like something stopped the engine from turning the moment you select a gear?

Verify the filter is securely up in place in the trans pan, not sucking air past it.

If I don't play with the throttle then it does just stall but if I get through the 10-15 seconds of it trying to stall while moving forward, it acts completely normal. And I will check the filter. Thanks!

Moving but attempting to stall out that symptom is little different then stalling out can't move.

Chance trans has nothing to do with it, might just be a sticky IAC from sitting. Not opening/cycling fast enough to prevent rpm drop when first put in gear.

Take a minute if haven't run the self test, always best place to start. If get a system pass so be it, getting system pass/no stored codes is just as helpful as getting trouble codes/failed self test.

Fancy code reader handy yea but not necessary.
