1996 XLT Aftermarket Radio removal/installation

Hey guys,

I have a 96 F150 XLT that has an aftermarket JVC radio in it at the moment. I am looking to replace it with a Pioneer radio but am not sure of the process of how to do it.

I have read multiple articles online saying you need a wire harness, mounting bracket, and a removal kit to actually remove the radio.

I've heard it isn't that complicated, but it sure sounds like it is. Could someone who has done this with a similar ford please give me the run-down?

Thanks a lot,
Mike

Do I need to disconnect the negative ground cable from my battery before doing any work to the radio?

All you need is two butter knifes to remove it and hope the previous owner left you enough slack in the harness he wired in for you to splice into. BTW I like solder and heat shrinks vs but connectors plus its cheaper.

Thanks for the info!! You lost me on the solder and heat shrinks. I have very little experience with electronics/wiring in trucks so that will be the tricky part for me. What exactly will I have to do with the wires once I get the radio out? I understand the basics, find the wires for speakers, aux, antenna...but other than that I'm lost!

just match the wire colors with the colors on the radio harness if you need one. the two headunits may actually have the same style connectors. as far as getting if apart walmart stock headunit removal keys.BUT if your jvc is like my dual headunit you need to take apart the dash because the slots to remove it with the keys are on the back of the harness. i just installed my backwards so the radio slides out but is snug enough that it wont rattle out. or i guess i have seen them removed with a claw hammer stab the claws into the radio and rip dont recommend it at all.
