Hey everybody, it's a snow day here in Mechanicsville!!!

Got a question hoping someone can help. I have a '78 F-150 and I'd like to put the old Bicentennial plates on it that I have. I plan on doing current registration with inspection, but wondered if anyone has tried this before and would DMV allow it?

Best check with the VA DMV site. One time I looked into specific year plates and it was very restrictive as to where and when you could drive the vehicle.

 

Are they antique or vintage or just old? VA DMV has very specific requirements as to which is which. As said above, specific restrictions on driving too.
Info on DMV's website is pretty thorough.

 

They're vintage/old. I would have a current registration on them (2014 sticker). I just wanted to use the bicentennial plates because they would/could have been used on the truck back in the day.

It has antique plates now, but I don't care for the restrictions of antique tags. Since the truck would pass inspection, I thought just go with a regular passenger registration and hopefully use these particular plates.

There's a section in the Code of VA that allows for the continued use of Bicentennial plates, so that might be an in for me.

 

Make sure you look at what's on the DMV site. OLD does not mean Vintage. The vintage plates have the year stamped into them. Antique plates do not, IIRC.

Called DMV customer service. Bicentennial plates are not transferable. Bummer.
