1979 f-250 429 auto to stick
hello all im new to the forum and also new to the ford scene, i have had a few old chevys but this is my first old ford.
i have a 1979 f250 with a 429/c6/203
i dont care for the t-case at all and would prefer a manual transmission
one of my friends is parting out a rotted out f-150 with a 351m 4 speed so that would be the petal donor and possably tranny-tcase donor or i have also found a zf5 out of a 1990 1 ton with a 460 on craigslist 90 ford zf 5 speed 4x4 transmission with transforecase (460 engine) - $650 (cleveland, ohio)
does anyone know what t-case that is by looking at it? is it any good?
also what bell housings will fit the 429? will a newer 460 one fit? will a 350m fit?
im sorry dragging this on i just wanna make my ford mor lovable

I have not done this conversion yet. There are a lot of threads that involve the 351M to 460 conversion. Since your 429 is a 385 Series engine, I would start reading all you can. They will give you the run down as to the clutch componente you need. I know there is one company, I think L&L, that makes a kit for this.
The F150 should have a lot of the parts you will need. Grab everything you can. remember to grab the small parts like the the linkage for the clutch pedal and any bracket that attaches to the frame too.
As far as the ZF5 goes, that would be another research project. Others have done it, I have just not paid attention to what engines they were running or the details involved.
I believe the Transfer case looks like a Borge-Warner 1356, but it's hard to tell from the picture.
Check out this link Ford Transfer Case Identification .
The 5-Speed would be nice to have for the highway, they just don't have that "Old Skool" feel to them.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Yes, the bellhousing for the 351M-400 will fit the 429. The trans and t-case from the F-150 will bolt right up too, but if your wanting to upgrade to the ZF5, more fabrication will be needed particularly to the clutch linkage. There are more than a few threads on here regarding this swap. Do some searching and you will find. I've considered this swap myself but right now time and money just aren't there.

i want to put a zf5 transmission in my 1979 ford f250 and the transmission came out of a 1990 ford f250 4x4 with a 460. my question is will the flywheel and clutch off of the 1990 fit on my 79 460?
Casting number on flywheel: D9TE-6380-BB (Ford part number: D9TZ-6375-A flexplate-use with external balance: 1979/97).

1983/97 F250/350 460 uses a hydraulic clutch.

I have done this swap, 79 Bronco 351M to 460. NP 435 trans. Your 351M bellhousing will bolt to 429. Stock 460 flywheel won't fit in that bellhousing is the issue. I bought a flywheel/clutch kit from L&L. Worked perfectly. Includes a 302 pilot bearing which goes in the second step of the 460 crank. In all the research I did it seems I remember something about some or all 429's not having the second recess in the crank to allow using the smaller pilot bearing, which i think makes the trans input shaft too long without it. Those folks were using a spacer 3/8" or so I think. 460 had the recess so no issue for me.

Have a 1994 Ford F-450 with a 460 and a dead E4OD transmission. I want to install a 6 speed O/D similar to what is behind a Cummins. I found out that the the largest clutch Ford installed in ANY truck with a 385 engine was a 13". The Cummins setup is a 14" with the synchro 6 speed. This is what I was looking for but no luck. To make this happen, adapters need to be fab'd. Next best option s the 13" clutch and and only minor fab to install.
Many of the mid 90's F-600, 700 and 800 trucks had a 429 engines hooked up to a Fuller 5 speed. The 5 and 6 speed Fullers share the same setup. Many also had DD 13" clutches. Has anyone owned or operated a Ford with the 429 and Fuller transmission ?? Will the 13" DD hold up to some heavy hauling??
