Hey guys,
I am currently driving a 1995 F-150 with the 5.0, dual tanks. My issue right now is that it will start and run fine some days, and then other days it will cut out while I am driving or just simply not start. When it does cut out it won't start back up right away but it will start eventually (about an hour or so afterwards) I have changed out the fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, catilic converter, spark plugs, and ignition switch and ignition control module. honestly i have ran out of ideas on what it could be and i'm just tired of throwing money at the problem. I took it down to my local Ford dealership and they couldn't figure out what the problem was. I am open to any ideas at this point.
Since you've already replaced the TFI, I'd be replacing the PIP at this point. The easy way to do that is simply swap in a new distributor.
The other thing to do is remove and open up the cover on your PCM. My bet is that you'll find leaking capacitors, which can cause unpredictable behavior. Don't just use a junkyard replacement here as it's a good bet the one in the junkyard is failing as well - you need to replace the capacitors or get a truly rebuilt unit.
Sounds like PIP as DPD.. stated. Also good point with PCM, as its simple to remove and open to check for faulty caps, etc. Just take care when removing it, and ground yourself before touching any contacts or traced to prevent a static discharge that can easily render it completely dead. I would think there would be other problems though if the PCM was failing, but it doesn't hurt to look/check.
Also, have you checked fuel pressure with a fuel pressure tester? Could be in-tank pump failing. It would cause similar problems. Well worth a try before swapping another distributor in or pulling PCM.
Ok, do both tanks work correctly? I would still check to see what pressure is while running and while off. When you turn the key to start position, do you the fuel pump prime? If you can switch tanks, can you tell if each one primes when you use the selector? Could also be maybe bad tank switch... Just a couple of more ideas..
Well, pulled out the PCM and gave it a look, nothing looked fried or damaged. Switched out a Air Flow Sensor but still having issues, runs great for about 5 miles before i park it then it wont want to start back up again, same as always, turns over but just doesn't get it.
