I didn't snap a photo but this morning one of my dash lights stayed on after I started it, most of the lights don't have the plastic insert so it's just a light. It's between the right turn signal light and the brights. Also, it was like 0 degrees this morning and I wasn't using any fuel additives so that might have something to do with it. Never seen this light come on before so that's what I'm thinking.
And while I've got you here, what's a good anti-gel to use in winter? I've never had to get any before so I have no idea. Hopefully I didn't do any damage running it for a few minutes this morning without it, seemed like it was idling fine just smoking a lot.
Um, what year truck? This section covers THREE generations of truck, with different dash clusters. Do you have the owner's manual? They're crazy cheap on eBay. If it's an '83-'86 truck, and if I'm remembering right, that's the 4x4 indicator. If it's a '92-'94, all the diesel-specific lights (WTS, WIF, Filter) are in a separate panel, so it wouldn't be any of them. If it's an '87-'91 I can't help you.....
Anti-gel, I usu. end up getting Power Service white-bottle, just because it's what goes on sale most often at the local man-mall (Farm & Fleet). And make sure you buy good quality winterized fuel from a reputable station that sells a lot of diesel (faster turnover).
I figured people would just look at my sig like usual, I went into detail in it. Otherwise I'd be posting it in every thread I make.
It's not the 4x4 light, I know that one has the cover over the bulb. Not sure what it would be. Thanks for the tip on getting an owners manual, planned on doing it eventually.
BRAKE (!) failure warning light. Comes on with the parking brake, and also (more importantly) if there's a hydraulic failure with the main brakes. Goes on at engine start as a bulb check. If it's still on, and you're not using the parking brake, check the level in the master cylinder and inspect the lines, calipers and wheel cylinders for leaks.
My brake booster isn't working, could that have something to do with it? It's never came on before today that I noticed, so I figured it was temperature related.
Could be. I haven't tested it or checked the FSM to see if it's true on the '80s vintage trucks, but on the later ones (PSDs), that light is also tied to the vacuum pump. There's a sensor on the vacuum distributor block; if it senses no or insufficient vacuum, it sets the BRAKE (!) light. So check your vacuum pump; it may be the cause of your inop power brakes.
There should be a separate light down by the 'Wait To Start' light for the low vacuum warning.
Everyone else is right though, that light is the BRAKE (!) warning lamp, also used with the parking brake. It's supposed to come on while the key is in start or if there is a leak, but mine very rarely has...
I can't remember right now but come to think of it, the Water In Fuel light you're talking about did come on momentarily. I think maybe everything was just a little screwy since it was zero degrees outside.
No WTS light on the '85. The only lights down there are GLOW PLUG, WATER IN FUEL and ENGINE TEMP. Is '86 that different?
For the earlier 80's trucks, the GLOW PLUG light I'm pretty sure was renamed WAIT TO START when they changed the dash. My interpretation was to make the truck more idiot proof as most people wouldn't know what glow plugs are, but might pay attention to something telling them to WAIT!!! before starting.
Other than that, I'm not sure what the earlier dashes look like, sorry.
