White knight Fixed Mount Light Unit #4199 - REVIEW and INSTALL ISSUES
Ho Ho Happy Holidays,
I installed a White Knight Fixed Mount Light Unit #4199 on my 2002 F350 7.3l. Not sure what brand of hitch I have....as I bought this truck used.
Works quite well. Illuminates the ground to help you place your wheels when backing up using your side mirrors. Doesnt really illuminate very high up which makes sense given its placement. I like it. Think it's worth it. I dont think peicing together lights and wires and fastening them into place would save all that much money, unless you could get the 2 lights used.
I also bought the adaptor plate (Part # 4156 7-Pin Trailer Wiring Plug Relocation Plate - not optional) and the Plug N' GO 7-Pin Trailer Wiring Adapter (optional) #4149.
You need to consider 2 things before you purchase. Does your ball mount have 4.5 inches between the back of the ball and the center of the pin hole. If not you'll need to buy a longer one. See pics of this measurement at: All Products - White Night Rear Lighting Truck and SUV Reverse Lights
Also consider that the light might cover up the pin hole if it is very close to the end of the receiver. In my case it didnt. Plenty of room to get my hand behind the light unit and pull out the pin.
Also, you can easily machine a Wiring Plug Relocation Plate. Its just a rectangular peice of metal (maybe 3 -4 inches long by 1 inch wide with a hole for a 13mm bolt smack in the center of the little plate. You could even use a peice of thick plastic. Its here:http://www.whitenight.com/Ford_F150F250F350_1999to2003.htm. They ask like $15 for it. Kinda ridiculous. Should come with the kit. If you need the instructions hat come with the plate just let me know. I will scan it.
I used the plug and go adaptor instead of hard wiring it but it sticks out quite far, so I might hardwire it in.
The housing is made of plastic, thankfully. No rust. Decent quality.
Lastly, my receiver (or perhaps its the bottom of the bumper...dont recall) has two tabs on top which didnt allow the light to slide all the way back, so I used a small PVC plastics saw (you could also use a tin snip) to cut two 1/2-inch wide x 2 inch long strips of plastic out of the top of the light housing so it would fit around those two tabs. Peice of cake. Fits fine after that.
I recommend it. Between the White Knight and the reverse LEDs in the factory housing, I can finally see when backing up. Frankly I wouldnt mind a couple more 55 watt lights up top as well!
Yes It can be quite easily stolen if you dont lock the ball mount.
Good luck in 2013.
