I'm debating on a 460 swap, my 351W was rebuilt about 1K miles ago and I know the 460 was used hard. To swap my ZF 5 speed would require a new tranny also. The parts '88 has a C6 3 speed auto, which i don't want. My 351 is stock, but even with the 36x14.5's it has plenty of power with 4.10 gears. But, I towed my camper this weekend and was dissappointed, especially on hills. I was wondering if the 351 could be modified cheaply to keep up with a stock 460. Any input would be appreciated.
A 351w can definately be modified to beat a stock 460. Check out the 351w engine forum. There's probably already a wealth of information in there that can help you.
But remember this about power - the sky's the limit as long as your budget is.
A 351 has more than decent power. How much does your trailer weigh? I hauled a 2000 pound trailer over Trail Ridge Road (12,000+ feet elevation) in Rocky Mountain National Park with my 300 six banger with no problem and I know the 351 has gobs more power than the 300.

My trailer is an old 20' hard top camper and probably weighs about 3,000 pounds. The main problem though is the wind resistance is like a shoe box. Your 150 is 2wd, and probably has skinny tires on it. Mine is a jacked up F-350 4X4 pushing 14.5” wide big ole mudders. That is asking a lot of a factory small block. My old truck was a 2wd ‘72 F-250 with a big block 390, Headers, and duals. It of course did better for many reasons. I just wanted to know if anyone could provide some suggestions on cheap ponies so that the truck will tow at highway speeds and not loose so much on hills. I would love to have the 460 big block, but since my motor, clutch, etc. is fresh and my tranny is good I’d rather just mod this set up if possible for a reasonable price.
Mine was a 16' hard top camper and the wind resistance was major (the Aerostar 3.0 really struggled to go 65 with that rig). But I see your point with 4x4 and pusing big tires. The engine forums seem a likely place for mods.
Yeah, wind resistance is worse than the weight. I was impressed with how straight the truck kept the camper, even when semis passed. I was also thinking about buying a cheap aluminum cap to put over the bed when I go to cut the wind resistance which should help a lot. Thanks for the tip I'll keep looking there. I'll probably do headers & exhaust 1st, I was just wondering where is the best place to start.
Also consider one of those wind deflectors that attach to the top of the cab. Banks makes a lot of RV power packages (not cheap). Wonder if they make an RV cam for the 351. Also check out www.PerformanceUnlimited.com as I believe they are strictly Ford and they do off road performance and racing.
Thanks I'll check. I would like to put a cam in, but the truck is '90 so it has speed density fuel injection. My friend had that on his '97 V-10 Ram and he spent like $300 on a perf. cam, but due to the computer constantly trying to make the engine run stock he had very little gain. That is why mass air is great, you can make mods like cams, heads, throttle bodies etc. and the computer will learn to work with them. Speed density runs great stock, but is not mod friendly.
Check this thread out first. There is debate that speed density may not be the performance stick-in-the-mud that it is thought to be. Worth a shot anyway.
