24 years ago tonight
24 years ago tonight I arrived home after graduating from College.
My Dad took a Grey Hound bus from Akron Ohio to Denver Co where I was going to school around the 15 of December 1988. I was going to need help driving home.
I had purchased 2 ford Unibody trucks while living in Denver, a 61 and a 62. Nice old trucks. We drove one and towed the other. The one we were driving had the 292 and 3 on the tree.
We left on December 22 at 6PM and drove and drove till I couldnt drive anymore. Oh yea I must add that we were running about 45-50 mph as things werent towing well
I remember stopping for the night in Nebraska and the radio said it was 9 degrees. (we slept in the truck for 50 minutes) When we got up were were froze! I drove and drove some more. All the next day I drove into the night.
My Dad then took the wheel the next night only to be pulled over in Iowa for going 39 mph for over a mile. (Min speed is 40 MPH)
Dad woke me up and I continued driving untill we arrived here in Ohio on Christmas eve.
1400 miles in 48 hours, 14 stops for fuel and 14 quarts of oil
It was the adventure of my lifetime and I did it all with my Dad 24 years ago today.

Spending time with my Dad after being gone for a while at school, driving an old ford truck, and making it home for Christmas.
I remember the whole trip my Dad saying we have to keep driving to beat the snow, we were always ahead of it.
We had the trucks loaded with all my stuff and tools, and my Dad packed a lighter and a CANDLE so if we became stranded we wouldnt freeze to death.
The day he arrived in Denver we had a heavy snow and the parking for the bus station was on the top of the building and I remember driving up the ramp to park on top and I made it all the way to the top (just the front tires actually made it) and started spinning and slid the 61 all the way back down to the street level.

One of the best times I had with my dad was also truck related. We went to the Iola swapmeet about 30 years ago. Sunday afternoon it started to rain. We came up to booth with a guy who had two doors and a hood in mint condition, along with 3-4 big boxes of miscellaneous parts. I asked what he wanted for the doors and hood and he replied that he wanted to.get out of rain and I could have everything for $100. Dad and I loaded everything into my '85 F-150 and left the swap meet. We had planned to take a couple of days to.drive around central Wisconsin checking out old country junk yards. We couldn't find a hotel that night so we parked the truck in a rest site along the Wisconsin river. My dad slept on the seat and I slept in the.back of truck on top of parts I bought. In the.morning when we woke up across the river there was a doe and her two fawns playing. What great scene to watch. We spent the next two days going through old junk yards. We met some very interesting people who ran these little yards. They're are all gone now, including my dad. He died about six years later. Its a trip I will always remember.
