hey guys, I am looking at super duty trucks with the v10, Overall from the diesel and gas world I am not impressed with the 4r100 trans. ON the other hand, the 5r110 seems to have a great reputation. What year did the v10s start having the 5r110?
We have a 4R100 in our 12 year old tuck with a 126K hard pulling miles and it's never had a problem but I have maintained to from new with fluid & filter changes every 30K. Is it as strong as it was in 2000 NO but it's still strong for a truck this old and that many pulling miles YES. I would like to have a 5 or a 6 speed but ours is still a good truck. If you are buying used it can be a problem with any transmission because you don't know what has happened to it in its past life.
I have almost the same truck but my mileage is only 105,000. Most of the miles have been towing my 7,000# RV trailer. I too have changed the trans fluid every 30K. I also added a trans temp gauge at around 75K miles when I had the rear end gears (mine is 2WD) to 430's. I think my trans is as good as anyones. I have no fear of the 4R100 in my '99 SCab. If you take care of it, it will take care of you.
MUCH, MUCH harder! The torque impulses from a diesel engine are MUCH tougher on a transmission than a gas engine..
so if two engines have similar torque numbers the diesel will be tougher on the trans? I know the torque happens at a lower rpm if that has anything to do with it. I'm assuming the trans was made for the diesel?
The R4100 can be a decent tranny if you add the Transgo Tugger shift kit (less than $200) and if you are really towing alot or heavy, get the HD replacement parts and converter from www.suncoastconverters.com , then you will have an almost bullitproof tranny.
