94 RAnger, A4LD overheat/leak
94 A4LD 4L 4x4 150K I had xmission rebuilt about 30K ago. It now seems to be overheating and leaking fluid. I have changed fluid and filter (very little metal flakes in pan). After filter/ fluid change it leaked at pan gasket but now leaks only at front seal (I guess) and fluid comes out small hole at bottom of bell housing, During rebuild they added auxillary cooler. I tested that and pump is pumping fluid through it. However after warm up the cooler is quite hot to the touch. Questions:
1. What makes tranny overheat? 2. Am I in for another rebuild? 3. If so, would anyone like to comment on ford factory rebuilds? 4. anyone like to comment on wheather a bigger auxillary cooler would eliminate the problem. All help or comments appreciated.

94 RAnger, A4LD overheat/leak
I have an '85 with an A4LD. It also leaks at the front seal. The strange thing is that it only leaks when it warms up. I don't think it's overheating, but I could be wrong about that. In the winter time, I can drive it a good bit, before it gets warm enough to start leaking. In the summer time, I have to be really careful how far & long I drive. One thing that REALLY got my attention ... my 4th gear is bad. It does shift into 4th, but there is a serious malfunction. The 4th gear in these transmissions is the weak link, in case you haven't done the research yet. If you do some searches in this website, you'll get some good info. The one thing that I noticed is that when I did drive it in 4th gear, the leaking started almost immediately, and got much worse. When I never drive in 4th, it runs alot better, alot longer. Do you use your 4th gear much?? If yes, try driving around in "regular drive" (3rd gear & under, no overdrive). If you do that, does your problem improve??
