The rare 48-52 rear bumper!!

In all the ads, tho, you can see thru the rear wheel well that there are no bumper brackets.

No wonder the aftermarket bumper market was pretty prominent with those trucks. The farmers didn't have a choice (and I'd bet that the 51-52 bumper from the dealer was much more expensive than the aftermarket ones). It kind of baffles my mind that Ford left the bumpers off the 48-50's. Makes you wonder if the rear bumper didn't fall prey to the money spent on the "Million Dollar Cab" development.

I have a '48-'52 parts book and bumpers are listed before "Accessory" section.
As was stated, parts books are for "replacement parts" and can have items for later trucks listed for earlier trucks (being a '52 book it would obviously only cover '52 and older)
Listed are:
Grp # 17781 BAR (Rear bumper impact)
48-50 - C (Panel) 7C-17781-A
51-52- C (panel) 1C-17906-C
51-52 - C,D,Y (F1-F2) 1C1906-B
I have a 1950 Paneltruck that came with a smooth bumper (not ribbed) that is the same in appearance as the front bumper, so I am going to assume it is an original Ford unit. Also, a paneltruck has a rounded rear end and the bumper is rounded to fit. A pick-up will be flat across.
Knowing this I would say that bumpers were not available from Ford for the '48-'50 pickup, although in the '52 parts book, there is a listings for rear bumper brackets and hardware for 48-52 C,D,Y (except Panel), I assume so a 51-52 rear bumper could be put on a 48-50 truck and this is why the parts are listed.
It would make sense that a rear bumper for a '48-'50 would be smooth if available (as the front is), although I am sure most consumers of the time didn't worry about originality or matching front and rear bumpers.
Chuck would know for sure and has earlier parts books to confirm.

Have to remember that the war had just ended and steel was still in short supply. The manufacturers wanted to crank out as many new trucks as they could, so anything they didn't have to put on them they didn't. Farmers and tradesmen put on whatever was most functional for their use, there wasn't much need for a rear bumper except as a step or a work surface. It's easy to confuse the way our trucks were used, the way they fit into society, and roads and traffic conditions encountered in their day with the way those things are today.
