Lobe seperation angle question

My cam in my 460 has a lobe sepperation angle of 110 deg. This seems small since most of the cam specs are generally 112 or so. Is it beneficial to have a smaller angle or larger? Motor is mildly built. 9.5 compression, oversized valves, roller rockers, .530 lift cam. Just want to squeeze every ounce of power out of it. Thanks!

Widening the sep tends to smooth out the idle quality and loose mid range torque.

On very small cams a wide sep will increase torque right of idle and help fuel mileage. After you get up to around 220 or better @ .050 duration, bringing the sep back, more narrow builds more hp with the stock heads.

For years ford shelf cams were proven Chevy grinds that worked in a 460 but was no where near optimum.

Most BBF heads the exhaust barely flow 50 % of the intake, the chevy guys for years say that if your exhaust didn't flow at leas 70% it would not make power, that is just a myth. The fords just need a little more split between the intake and exhaust lobes to have enough time to rid the chamber of exhaust.

List your cam specs and someone can tell you where you need to have it.

Separation also effects your vacuum so you have to take that into consideration for power brakes.

Hope this helps............

I would list cam specs but I think I lost/misplaced/threw away the sheet. The truck runs well as far as I am concerned, but this being my first build from the ground up was just curious. Thanks for the help.
