You tell me...
I have put off buying a new headliner kit for probably 8 years, because of all the stories of $200+ shipping charges. But I really need one, so I decided to shop around a little. I called the closest shops to see how much it would really be.
C&G in CA quoted me only $66 to ship it, including O/S charges. They ship via UPS, not a truck line. That seems like a change from some stories I've heard? I don't know if Dennis Carpenter has changed the way they're packaging the kits, but these are the boxes I got, below. The tall one is the main headliner, rolled slightly. It doesn't seem to be any worse for the rolling.
So is this something new, or have the other vendors been putting it to us?? After seeing the boxes, even the $66 seems high!

Yea, I never understood that quote either. That was one of things that made me start looking elsewhere than Mac's, of course they were not the only one's with that kind of quote. However, in fairness I do know that UPS and the USPS for a long time would not handle packages over certain dimension, however, I think that UPS has changed that policy in the past year or two. I got my headliner from Classic Haulers a couple of years ago, but I had to drive past their shop on the way to a job and picked it up myself, saving the shipping cost.

I really don't see why it costs so much to ship those kits. I researched them my self. DC's shipping charge to me was going to the standard 9.99 plus an extra oversize shipping charge of 14.50. I am only 60 miles away from them.
I went down and picked it up at the counter. It took the guy about 10 minutes to pick the individual pieces off the shelves. He offered to put it in box for me but I was driving my crew cab so I didn't need the box.
I think the extra charge must be from the shipping company because it is such a fragile item.
Since you are not near another supplier an idea would be to contact them all by email or phone and see if they have any shows coming up in your area and have them bring it to you. An hour or so drive would save the shipping charge atleast. If that is option for you.

Sometimes you have to consider what it would cost you to go and pick it up. Time/gas /meals and most likely accommodations. Often time I have things shipped from a town 90 miles away at a cost of $20-$25 with the price of gas and 3 1/2 to 4 hours travel time it's easy to do the math. Trucking outfits have alot of overhead to consider and the end user is going to have to flip the bill. At least this is the lecture I got from my better half. I don't like paying it either but unfortunately I don't live next door to the vendor either so have to dig into my pocket Oh ya, $66 sounds like a deal

My wife bought my headliner about 18 years ago. I remember at the time it was something like $50-75 for freight charges. It came on one box, about 5'X5'X12". It was delivered to the bank she worked at and the driver wouldn't help her unload it from the truck. She had to get a couple of the other women in the bank to help he get it off the truck. The driver was either a total jerk or he liked watching young women in high heels stretch.

BobJ has confirmed what I suspected -- Dennis C. has started rolling the main piece to allow them to be shipped by UPS. Smart move. The rear part of the main section has a curve in it anyway, I don't see a downside (but I haven't tried installing it yet, either).

Congrats on finaly getting it after 8 years, it will be some time b4 I can afford one.( over time I think ive changed my mind about redoing the diamond tuck in mine) I think there are a lot of us that would love to see a step by step install photo spread. I know it can be a pain to stop and click, stop and click, ect. but any pics would be apreceiated. Good luck Ross.
