7.3 IDI engine knock (bad injectors???)
#17
I'd like to see this thread be solved because mine has a lower end knock as well but it's very very faint when at idle you have to be under the truck to hear it but when driving if i shift a gear early and it's at low rpms and i hit the gas to get her going you can hear the knock very clearly, and it's slow at lower rpms and climbs with them. Not sure if that's the same for you

I have s 1993 Ford F-350 super can and I just rebuilt the engine and I as well drove it about 5 miles and the loud popping noise started drove it home and I bled off the injectors and changes the fuel filter and it's still making that popping noise what do you think it is

I've only had one diesel with bad injectors, a 1982 Datsun/(later Nissan) King Cab SD22 4 cyl. w. 5 speed. It had BAD knocking sounds, much similar to rods knocking and with a LOT of white/blue smoke, when I bought it. I recall that it had over 300k miles on it.
I replaced the injectors and it ran like a watch for another 100k miles when I left it on a friend's ranch in California in 1998. No knocking and no smoke other than a very little bit of normal smoke. I loved that truck!
I have not read any posts here at FTE (yet) that associate bad injectors with a loud knocking sound. So what's the deal? Bad Ford IDI injectors don't cause an engine knocking sound?? That Datsun SD22 I think was an IDI also. (CONFIRMED: IDI)

you didn't rev it in the vid so does the sound change at all in intensity when you rev it? or is it just faster the noise sounds to fast to be a injector might be piston related. more diagnosis's is needed. there is 2.5 gallons of oil in that moter so two quarts low is nothing. but if you ran her out, damage will result...

7.3 idi
Howdy, I am new to this forum and just bought my first diesel last week.
I bought a 1988 F-350 7.3 IDI with a 3-speed auto 4x4. It has a 5 digit odometer and I was promised it had 118,000 on it and not 218,000. When I first got it I was told the glow plugs were weak, they had to be warmed for a while before starting. Other than that the truck ran and sounded pretty good for an old truck.
Day 2 I started to hear a very faint knock that at first sounded only like a "tick"
Day 3 I was driving down the road a all of a sudden it sounded like a piston was going to shoot out the side. That may be an exaggeration, but it was loud! Sounded like a blown gas motor.
I have done a lot of reading since on this forum and on others.
What I gathered was that it might be a fuel injection problem. So I followed what I read and released the pressure on each of the injectors to see if the noise would stop. I released the pressure on each one at a time and the knock never went away.
Sounds like it might be coming from the bottom of the motor.
I checked the oil when I bought it, and the oil barely touched the dipstick. I thought it was low, but when I read up on it I found out that the oil is supposed to be checked when hot because it expands. So after adding about 2 quarts I figured I might have over filled it.
My question: If the knock never stopped could it still be a fuel injection issue? Or did I just pay a lot for another pile of steel in the yard?
I would really appreciate any input or links anyone has on this!
Thanks!
