hummer tires...
anyone using hummer tires?
i just slashed an old 36x14.50x16.5 tls and now i am thinking about a set of 36x12.50 or 37x12.50x16.5 hummer tires. they are: goodyear mt/ mtr/ bfg baja.
i've got no experience with any of these tires. in the mud, is one better than the other? my truck only sees about 100 miles a year when
"they're making mud" out here. (n. cal.)
thanks in advance

the 37s are radial. they are OK in the mud great on the road.
this is the only one I've ever destroyed, and that was Afghanistan

The 36x12.50x16.5 are a Goodyear Wrangler RTII that are BIAS ply and once the tire warms up the flat spots sort of go away. They have a high center wear bar and it goes fast when run on pavement, and they do not have wet road manners. And can be hell to balance. Not all that flex of a side wall especially hanging on a 16.5 rim but you run the Hummer beads lock rims rims after you get then front recentered and there you go. Ok in mud if you have the HP to spin them clean and you can custom cut for a better grip.
IMO I'd go with the 37's for wear and better over all manners.
The 37x12.50x16.5 Goodyear MTR is a radial AT tire that has better road and wear manners. Still can be hell to balance. But even with the hummers rims about 80 lbs a tire and wheel combo. Pretty good in mud and sand and can re-grove when getting bad.
Yea they are cheap and available, I have 6 brand new never mounted 36's and 6 used 37's for some project someday. Cheapest 36 or 37 you will find new or used IMO.

i like those bottom ones. think they'll look good on them turbines? as for horses-
i dont know how much i have, but she can spin 36's through 4.10's fairly easy. road manners dont really matter-she spends more time in the mud than she does on the asphalt
still in the sand pit? if so i hope you make it home safe for the holidays.

I personally prefer the 36s.
Sure they are bias. Sure they aren't that great in wet weather. But, if you are only running 100 or so miles a year, they are a great tire. More aggressive than the 37s. In fact, I got a second set for my new project vehicle.
Both sets I balanced with lead shot in each tire.

the bias goodyears are said to be a good bit better in mud than the newer radials. Which should be obvious just from looking at the tread. Besides what everyone else said about bias tires thumping and riding rougher on the road, they are also getting really hard to find, since it seems they have all switched to the new radial tires so surplus of the goodyears is drying up. both figuratively and literally. The ones I've seen for sale lately look like they are getting dry rot and stuff.
either way they are both good values on mud tires if you can find them cheap. If you can't find them cheap, I can pretty consistently find 33-39" tires on craigslist with half tread for prices about the same as the militaries.
I got a set of 4 35" boggers mounted on wheels for around $300 then found another 2 (one has a screw through it, one has a big cut, both will patch) with nearly new tread that I traded a $140 harbor freight pick up crane for.

Garth and 77&79,
GREAT links!
16.5" tires are getting harder to find with the selection steadily dwindling. Trying to look on the bright side... often used 16.5 inch wheels can be bought reasonably too.
Have you fellows dealt with these companies? I'm also wondering about their reported remaining tread. I see lots of Craigslist type ads for used tires and it seems the majority of the time the sellers "embellish" (to put it lightly!) the tread remaining on the junk they're trying to peddle.
