twg1966....Have you met Chris? He lives in Victoria. What year is your truck? I have the early 99. My plugs that I have to pull for my FRX are either 9/32 or 1/4 inch square heads. Do not use vice grips on them. Find a good 4 point socket.
On the early 99 you need to grind some of the collector/up pipe connections just to get to the plugs to pull them. It is very tight on the drivers side. The AC will present some interference for the passenger side plug. 4 POINT SOCKET! Be advised.
Dwayne
You can use a 7mm box wrench also. It helps to un bolt the AC compressor and move it aside to do the passenger side. If at any point you feel the wrench start to slip, stop! Make sure you dont drop any of the new FRx screws in "death valley".
I haven't met Chris yet, but my truck is an 01. Will check on the 4 point sockets.
yay another Victorian!
im up on the nw side in between lwr mission valley and 1685 just inside the loop.
how bout you?
i could not get my frx installed fast enough when it arrived. it, and the hutch mod made drastic improvements to how my truck responds and sounds. if you need a hand with your frx install hit me up. or a hand with any repair/mod/preventive maintenance...
Thx guys. Chris, I work in Victoria, but live in Ezzell. But hey I am game for getting help and giving help. I will send you a pm with contact info when I get to the office.
I work downtown and I am a CPA by trade. But virtually every vehicle I have ever owned has had me turning a wrench.
Did the FRx a couple weekends ago, great modification and makes a huge difference in sound and throttle response smoothness. You won't be disappointed with your purchase. Ditto on the compressor removal.
In retrospect, I wish I had known about using the square sockets, I used a pretty darn good pair of vice grips and it was a significant challenge. Hope you have a smoother go of it. I found doing the CCV mod at the same time was a good idea since taking off the box to rotate it made getting to the DS rear plug a little easier, too. And removal of the intake plenum bolt right next to the plug helped out. It might not be as much of an issue for you if you've got the 4-point socket though. If you end up using a box wrench or vice grips, you'll see the bolt I'm talking about because it'll be right smack in the way of your swing line for the wrench adjacent to the plug. Once I removed it that helped considerably.
Another silly question I had to ask the guys on here had to do with the springs. My truck was bone stock in every way and the FRx will come with three regulator springs for the return with information on the pressures they provide but I didn't know which to use. On FTE advice, I used the middle one, gold I believe, and it works fine. Just in case you get to that point you won't have to slow down and search out an answer.
Was just down your way for work actually, inspecting that steel bridge on Dupont Road over the barge canal. You guys have great mexican food! Hope to head back sometime soon.

Thanks guys, now to find a few square sockets. I hope that once it arrives, all goes well. I plan on cleaning up the fuel bowl at the same time and replacing the O-rings then as well. After this we will have to work on the hutch/harpoon mod. .
Are there any torque specs for the new NPT fitting that go on the engine port or do most just do it by feel?
Tim M
Since it is a tapered pipe fitting there is no torque spec, so get them tight but not gorilla tight. A good diesel compatible thread sealer (Gasoila) is a good idea.
