Leaking oil cooler- Again!

I leave my 99 SD 5.4 sit in the weeds over the summer as i love my 96 obs 7.3 but only in the summer ( the blue smoke and smell reminds me too much of skidding-hard work).
I started it up the other day and did a pre-flight inspect like at work. Aok. Drove to the coffee shop on my way home and came out to a puddle underneath. My buddy owns a service station around the corner and he had a filter n a couple quarts so... I'm back in business.
Get home and go to hook up the camper and the brake pedal goes to the floor! Brake line blew from rusting away in the weeds. I look underneath for the brake fluid to tell me where the leak is and.... there's a big puddle of motor oil!!!
It wasn't the rusty ol oil filter, it was that oil to water cooler can that's above the filter. I just replaced that thing 3 - 4 years ago. I live in upper Mi and salt is everywhere but 4 years on an oem filter?! Its got 130k but only moved up here after 105k and has been mostly plowing snow ever since.
Are them prone to dying early? Should i be rinsing my truck better in the spring? Have i offended the corrosion spirits somehow by buying a Texas truck and bringing it to Mi?
I guess 160$ for a cooler ain't bad but the dicking around and shoveling up oil-soaked gravel's got to be worth something.
I only tow the camper an hour four t six times a year and the dump trailer with firewood six times too. Would ya be afraid to do without that pos and run er?
Thanks 4 letting me whine a bit.
