Rattling Noise during acceleration

I have a 01 5.4 with 210k. When I get on the gas and the rpms go above 3k, a chain like rattling noise happens. It sound like is coming from the back of the engine right by the firewall. The further the rmps go up the louder it gets. What could cause this noise. Will this effect the engine?

Thanks,
Ryan

Well...at that kinda mileage...it can be almost anything.

I'd look for exhaust leaks to start...maybe a loose heat shield or rocks/ gravel trapped in the heat shield.

then maybe check the flywheel for cracks

There's an exhasut leak, but i know that sound. There's no gravel trapped, and the noise is coming right behind the dash dead center. Don't see how it could be the fly wheel.

Anyone else like to chime in??

did you ever determine the sources of the noise?

This might be the heat shield surrounding part of the exhaust system right under the drivers seat.

While cold check it for being loose, typically at the rear--the spot welds break and cause this same sort of rattle.

If this is is a large diameter worm drive steel clamp can be used to secure it once again.

Have you changed / add Transmission Fluid? Anything else than MERCON V will chause "rattling" as well!
