big *** vice grips or channel locks is what I used. PITA for me is no one makes a replacement 3.0L v6 mechanical fan blade. I went electric.

I wasn't thinking when I typed my response, it has lefthand threads - you have to turn it clockwise to loosen it. Left to tighten/right to loosen. Sorry for the misdirection.

I have a shop manual for 91s, and it shows a RH thread for the 4.0 liter. The 2.9 and 3.0 liter are LH. It's probably the same for 94s

Maybe you should look for a different set of fan tools. This looks like the same setup that I did on an old E150, and the 2 wrenches that I had worked great. It was on good and tight too -- especially since I was originally misinformed about the thread direction.

I rented mine from Big Wheel -- no longer around. However, you might look at someplace like Checkers. I don't know anything about the Autozone tools, but I'd check to see if there are better ones available.

The 1 7/8 wrench is for Super Duty Diesels. The size you need is 1 7/16" for the clutch and another one 3 1/4" to hold the four bolt heads going into the water pump pulley. If you can't get the 3 1/4" size, you can usually hold the pulley by placing a big screw driver between two bolts and holding against the direction you are turning the fan clutch.

I got my tools from O'Reily's and the 36mm is the perfect fit for the big nut, and to take it off turn to the left if it is the 4.0 engine and tighten to the right; I just did my 93 ranger with the 4.0.
