78 & 44"s

Howdy Fellas..

I am building a pasture toy out of a 78 250 Custom SuperCab 4wd. I am wanting to run 44" tires and have the least amount of lift possible.

Would I be able to get away with a 6" lift if I trim the wells?

I am also looking for parts (Full Bed & Dana 60) in the East Texas area but having little success for this year model. Since this will be a frame off restoration I'd be okay with running newer gear and making mods. Any suggestions?

Use 6" front springs from a 99-04 Superduty and trim the fenders about 2-3"

You can get a 85.5-97 d60 but you will need to outboard your driver side spring hanger. Id also try to find a Sterling, D70 or 14bt.

Superduty axles aren't THAT bad either, and you can find some screamin deals on 'em, plus after market is finally catching up. 05+ are pure beef, giant brakes, and set up for basically radius arms already. Only downside is expensive unit bearings and metric bolt pattern for the wheels.

This is 4" lift on 40's and fenders cut about where the factory two tone paint goes up and over the fenders, don't see why I couldn't fit 44's:

nice truck cap', I like the stance. I think these trucks look really good when you trim the fenders and add big tires. I was thinking about using the bottom trim line as a guide, should look very similar to your truck.. and now you have me wondering if I could get by with a 4" lift... hmmm...

This is my first monster build so I am in the market for all experienced advice.

Thanks, I haven't run 44's with 4" lift, but I don't see any reason why it won't work. It's only 2" more than what I have in either direction. Here it is all flexed out, should be room for 44's:

and a closer to level view, that other pics makes it look like there's more room than there is, but still plenty of room:

Gotta outboard both sides of the springs.

because one outboared spring perch would look retared. gotta get the new hanger lower than the stock ones to help with pinion angle to make things work right anyway. Might as well make a new spring hanger/crossmember. Just got done doing this.

Dont mean to hijack here, but to save on repeating alot. I can get a screamin deal on some 395/85/20 (46x15.5) While id rather stick to 39-40" the deal is good and theres a steady supply of them for the price. truck is a 79 F-350 so i already have the HP KP D-60, and looking at the typical 14B or sterling, has a 60 rear for some reason. Question is, how much lift w/out trimming, and will these axles handle 46's? Truck will never see any hard crawlin, mostly just mud and general tear stuff up fun. Cab has a 2" body lift and im planning surgery for the bed anyway. Cut out flares for the front can be an option

Same answer with the 2" body lift.

All 79 250/350s with 4wd had d60 rears. D70s (most commonly 70Bs) were only an option for 2wd 350s

4" 77.5-79 250 lift 2" front fender trim 40" boggers

4" 99-04 SD lift with 1.5" forward zero rate. 440" boggers

Obviously no fenders but the SD springs and zero rates lifted the truck 2.25" and moved the axle forward a total of 2.25"
