ats uprgrade 093 vs 12cm holset hx35

Which turbo would run better on the idi? An aftermarket ats 093 upgrade turbo (3 inch downpipe and larger exhaust housing I believe) or a wastegated hx35 with the 12cm exhaust housing? I can get a good used a holset from a 2000 dodge cummins about $200, how do these turbos compare to eachother? How do the sizes compare? The plan would be a stock pump turned all the way up, intercooled and no more than 20psi boost. Lots of low rpm power with quick spool would be best, for towing and fuel efficiency. Anyone have any recommendations for a turbo that would be an improvement over the ats? I might use the ats pipes or build a custom setup.

Thanks

I know a guy thats running a hx35 on his idi. Its got a smaller exhaust housing, not sure if its exactly what your talking about but he likes it over the 093. He said it sees 15-20 psi. Not sure how good it spools though, never rode in the truck personally

I have the hx35 12cm on mine and i like it. It is noticably bigger than the 088 ATS turbo as well as the old Banks. But i dont see why you couldnt use the up-pipes from another kit, even if it does take a little doing. Might have to make an adapter to change the angle or something, but shouldnt be too much work. I built my up-pipe using the factory NA Y-pipe.

Go with the Hx35. You will defintely have more power and more than likely equal or better spool up.

HX35 out of the 24v trucks is the higher flowing model.

The compressors both have different efficiencies...

If you plan on running real boost (20+), go with the HX... If you just want a truck to run your typical 12psi, stick with the ATS...

As i understand it, the hy35 has a hx30 hot side, small turbine and 9cm housing.

Would the Holset be as efficient as the ATS at 12 PSI? In the end would the efficiency make much of a difference considering the truck would be intercooled? I'd like to try and get like 8-10psi (or a little more) cruising on the highway and then just around 20 loaded at WOT. A quick spooling, powerful, fuel efficient truck would be the idea. I would imagine the Holset would spool slower then the ATS, although with the twin scroll housing and uppipes like NMB2's it might not make a difference? Since funds are limited, other than head studs, the plan is just to take full advantage of the stock cam and fuel system. My ATS needs a rebuild so before going that route I want to consider other turbos.

Do you have an idea of any chargers that would meet these goals better?

Thanks

The Hx35 is way better than the 093 ATS as far as efficiency goes. You would make way more power with a Hx35 hands down. Either go with a better turbo or upgrade that turbo if you want 20psi. RacinNdrummin actually has a really good upgrade for that turbo too...

I am new to this thread. I am very interested in the upgrade you are referring to above. I just purchased a 1994 F350 4X4 7.3 IDI & E40D transmission. We just finished our maiden voyage with a 20' travel trailer in tow est 5,000 lbs loaded & had a bit more trouble in the long hill sections going to a lake we frequent.

Please let me know what you would reccommend for towing & mpg.

My ideas are intercooler new or fabbed 3"dp & possibly a Snow injection kit & to keep track of egt's.

Any & all the help/guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

John

Personally i doubt you would need the snow kit, and for the price im not very impressed. IC definately, 3" DP definately. Check out R&D IDI Performance for the turbo / fuel upgrades.

Hairy, do you happen to have any pictures of your turbo set up? Up pipe? Turbine/charger position? Thx.

Go to his site and contact him about the turbo. I don't see the turbos on it but he should be able to help you out there. Also as far as water/methanol goes, there are cheaper kits than the Snow Performance kits but they are really good for lowering egts when towing. Plus it provides a nice power upgrade as well.
