Idk where its comming from but IDK if its I got Hotwire touching the ground cause everytime I turn my light on it I got smoke comming in the cab somewhere but the smoke comming from thru the radio????? Help please

 

First of all, please slow down, use punctuation, and construct your sentences in a thoughtful manner.

You're saying smoke comes out of the radio area with (I assume) the headlights on? Is that correct, or a different set of lights? What all has been done to this truck's wiring? Any fuses bypassed or incorrectly oversized?

I hate to tell you this, but if you've already seen smoke, then you are already signed up for taking apart your wiring harness. The smoke you are seeing is what used to be insulation - meaning wires may continue to short internal to your wiring harness where you can't see. Your answers can help pinpoint where you should start looking.

 

Okay Sunday I finally put my Exhaust Maniolds on was having to move a cherrypicker. so I turn my headlights on they started working just fine and they started flicking on and off. my truck started smoking though the radio and under the dash. next morning I pull the dash apart wires on my headlight were fried but I don't know what wire it is that fried. could someone tell me wiring code's are on the headlight switch. then I need to know my mom got fuse box and wiring harness out a 69 Ford Truck F250 will that work in my 78???

 

Based on what you are telling me, if I had to guess, I would say you have a short in the dash illumination circuit, and someone bypassed the dash illumination fuse (wrapped in foil, etc). Or the courtesy light circuit. Those are the only two that are subject to user error; the rest is protected internally by a circuit breaker that you can't disable.

The dash illumination circuit is BLUE with a RED stripe. The courtesy circuit going IN to the switch is GREEN with a YELLOW stripe. It goes out to the dome light as BLACK with a BLUE stripe. Let me know if the cooked circuit looks like a different color (but I would be surprised).

A wiring harness and fuse panel from a '69 will not work in your '78. Your '78 is much more complicated.

There is no wire that goes from the headlight switch directly to the headlights. A RED with YELLOW stripe wire goes from the headlight switch to the dimmer switch on the floor. The dimmer switch then goes out to the high and low beams.

A BROWN wire goes from the headlight switch to the front market lights. Neither of these circuits would explain smoke coming out of the radio area. It's likely more than one thing got cooked.

It's not completely clear to me what you are asking. I'm also going to take a wild guess and assume that someone has modified your truck's wiring or done something they shouldn't. This is about the only way to make what you're seeing happen.

here a question why the fuse didn't blow out in the <NOBR>first place</NOBR>. The fuse is supposed to stop the wires from melting down and catching fire???

 

As fmc400 has explained, the wire to the headlights is directly from the headlight switch. That's why you can pull the light switch to the on or parking lights position and your lights come on while the keys are still in the house on the coffee table. The fuses are protecting circuits that operate while the key is on. Designers having safety in mind allowed for light switch without a key so you can walk away stranded with your flashers blinking and your car locked and keys in your pocket.
I'm thinking there's a wire someone tapped into to hook up a radio and it's probably a blue wire with a red stripe running in a strand along the top edge of your underside dash.
You could pull the dash pad and probably see a trail of burnt tape and brittle wires.

This is the opposite of what I said. There is no direct connection between the headlight switch and the headlights. Power from the headlight switch goes through the dimmer switch first before going to the high or low beams. Please refer to my previous post:
