First fluid changes... thanks y'all!

So did my first ever oil change and fuel filter change this morning on one of these trucks... thanks to you guys and all I've learned here, it went well!

One question, though... are there any tricks to getting the horizontal fuel filter out without getting soaked with diesel? I drained the WIF plug first hoping that would pull most of the fuel out of the HFCM, but there was still TONS that came with that filter.

No clue last time the filters and oil were changed on this thing, but the filters were all pretty bad and the oil (despite being at operating temp) was like a thick sludge at the base of the oil pan (actually stuck to the drain plug!) Looked really nasty.

Running Rotella T6 5W40 Synthetic now. Took about 14 quarts of it, just like y'all said! Here's hoping it helps the truck drive more smoothly!

It's easy, just run it up on a lift to change the filters, that way you just step out of the way. Actually, when I changed my filters I really didn't have much run out after draining from the wif plug. Having a lift makes it much easier though.

I have 2wd and have no problem draining it.
I have qt size peanut butter plastic jar.
fits up perfect when i loosen the upgraded
hfcm plug all the fuel comes out nicely.
Pulling the filter housing only a bit of fuel
comes out.

I stick a rag on the frame rear of filter housing. Wear rubber gloves, and I have a plastic tray I lay on my chest. Let'r pour!

( I also drain the WIF plug first)

You can tie a shop rag around your wrist so the diesel can't run down your arm...

Ah! I reach my arm in from the rear of the ex
and therefore my arm is above the wif drain plug.
If you go from under yeah it would run down
the arm.

I've found 2 easy ways to do it.

1) Run your fuel level down to 1/4 tank.use one of those portable automotive ramps to pull the front tire up on. That will raise the filter higher than the fuel in the tank so when you drain the water separator almost all the fuel will drain out of the housing.

2) Make your Wife do it, that way you won't get any fuel at all on you.

I've never gotten more than a pint out even with a full tank of fuel.

Try removing the fuel cap to relieve any press. in the tank. You can also try parking with the nose on an uphill incline. I do mine on a two post car lift and never a problem.

Someday I may have a lift to work off of... that's actually something that would be legitimate for me to have installed in my shop here since we have a number of property vehicles I have to work on. Maybe in a couple years I'll have that luxury!
